Perimeter is a real-time strategy video game developed by KD Lab for Microsoft Windows. It is published by 1C Company and Codemasters, and was released on May 21, 2004.[1][2]

Critical reception

Perimeter has received praise for its innovation in the real-time strategy genre, with the use of terraforming and morphing units.

The use of terraforming terrain to expand the player's base makes the land itself the primary resource, providing a different dynamic to other RTS titles.[3] The system of networking energy extractors across the terraformed land was seen to work well in skirmish and multiplayer games, in which cut-off sections can be taken over.[4]

The ability to morph different combinations of basic units into a larger variety of more powerful units was seen as being handled creatively[5], reducing the need to build a large army whilst retaining a rock-paper-scissors dynamic.[3]

Criticisms include the fractured nature of the storyline (with the player campaign frequently switching between the factions),[6] the lack of challenge in fighting the scourge[5] and their lacklustre artificial intelligence,[7] with missions againt other "frames" often being reduced to a war of attrition due to their use of the perimeter shield.[7]

Sequel

On July 4th KD Lab announced Perimeter 2: New Earth.
