Prince Grigori Aleksandrovich Potemkin (Russian: Григорий Александрович Потемкин) (1739 - 1791) was a Russian statesman.

He was born in Chizheva, near Smolensk. After studying in the University of Moscow, he entered the army. His participation in the coup of July 8, 1762, earned him the favor of Catherine II, who made him a Kammerjunker and gave him a small estate. After his fight in the Turkish war of 1769, he became Catherine's favorite, and was made by her commander in chief and governor general of Ukraine.

In 1784 he was made prince, and subsequently built a fleet in the Black sea, which was put to the service of Catherine's second Turkish war, with great success.

Potemkin died during a trip to Nikolayev.
