Favor? :-)

Hey Zora. I seem to remember seeing you at some India-related articles before, so I hope this request isn't too off-base. I wonder if you might have a little knowledge in the area of Rajput, and could possibly help me out with that dispute. I protected it after a nasty edit war and a request on WP:RFPP. The talk page is an ugly mess of people talking at people. As you can see on my talk page, some of the editors have been coming to me to argue their content dispute, which I don't have the first idea about, or the time right now (especially with this right now). Do you you could try to talk to them if you feel comfortable in the area? Thanks. Dmcdevit·t 21:42, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for whatever you can do. I've suggested tht they request mediation as well, but it looks like all the mediators have cases already. And yes I know what you mean, I'm supposed to be writing a paper on Thucydides right now (but not for WP, if you know what I mean). Dmcdevit·t 00:16, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

:O

I think it can be said that I am safely in your pocket :) Thanks for the thanks, and of course ask me for anything, I will use my judgment but, so far it seems that most things filtered through yours pass mine. I really think that most of my admin work will be deleting cheap vandalism, what a glorious task! See you around. gren グレン 01:06, 28 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

That template message has become sort of the "fix this article because it was mentioned scathingly in the news recently" template/category. I just placed it there so that more people would notice the article. — BRIAN0918 • 2005-10-28 09:12

POV edits??

Other than the creation of the ashari page (which previously did not exist!), the current versions of the edits are not POV.

There is one edit on Isha, stating that the best time is up till midnight... there is no difference of opinion among sunni ulema on this point.

There is one edit on Sunni, creating a section for the Athari school of aqeedah which was previously not discussed. At current, there is no mention of what is the "truth"... just an explanation of the Athari school from an unbiased point of view. Also, www.islaam.com and www.islamqa.com were added to give a more wholistic view of Sunni Islam.

There is one edit on Wahabism, stating ibn AbdulWahhab's statement about him following the Hanbali school. Again, this is stating a fact, what AbdulWahhab said... not stating who is or is not on the "truth".

The above edits are not biased... please illustrate how they are, if you feel they are.

The creation of the ashari page might be deemed as biased, however, it does not say whether asharis are right or wrong... (except for the quote of ibn uthaymeen)... it only states their differences with the athari school. If an Ashari or someone knowledgable on ashari aqeeda wants to build on that, by all means they can. However, this page previously did not exist... so some information is better than no information...

Muhammad article ext links

Hi Zora. User:Reddi wants to make the external link section like the references and give each external links a bibliography. I have tried to tell him that this is not wikipedia article-like and that this will make it hard for the readers to see. Please voice your opinion on talk:Muhammad. --a.n.o.n.y.m t 22:39, 1 November 2005 (UTC) [reply]

Hey Zora

Don't know if this is the right place to post a message to you, I'm new on here, but i wanted to take a moment to let you know that I think you're doing a wonderful job at keeping things on an even keel on the Islamic section. When it comes to Islam or any religion, there truly is no NPOV. All we can do is strive for an ANPOV (Almost Neutral Point of View)

As I get more familiar with Wikipedia, Hopefully I can be of some assistance

Graduate School

Just as a broad question... if someone had a need to apply to graduate school for something international relations based then what exactly should they do? Meaning, I realized I should probably apply somewhere at sometime and take GREs... good fun. gren グレン 23:13, 2 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot for your response... I've been busy... I really don't know good teachers from around... I like a few at the University of Delaware but the head of our IR department said I shouldn't go to school here, if you do undergrad here you shoot for better grad. SAIS (Hopkins) graduate program demands hardcore language requirements.... which made me think aobut the Peace Corps in Jordan since the Middle East is my regional choice (although South Asia would be my linguistic choice). Those two grants seem interesting and maybe I should look into it... I don't think I'm the prodigy that you seem to be, but, it's always worth a shot :) As for real life careers I'm just lining up friends to live off of now... but, I don't know... I don't need much money, just a library, computer and a place to live (which is why working as a professor seemed interesting)... I'm sure my wife will be relatively low maintenance, and some less than decadent career would be nice and there's nothing like molding the (relatively) youngs' minds towards social justice needs. So, I suppose I have no idea but if I apply to grad school I need to take GREs really soon, since... yeah... since I only figured out about a week ago that I can graduate by the end of summer. What you say is nice and useful, although not sure it's a good idea to listen to someone online so much :) I have to think about this and decide my life this weekend probably. gren グレン 04:00, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Need your help

I felt sure you would want some input into the creation of the list of articles mentioned graciously by Striver in this link: [1].

Can you place some nominees on my talk page, do you think? BrandonYusufToropov 19:08, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It's today (at least in the US -- apparently not in Ireland though). :)
Let me put it this way. If I were to offer to review all potential edits from Striver on, say, ALI, ISLAM, SUCCESSION TO MUHAMMAD, QUR'AN, etc., wouldn't that make life easier for everyone? Surely that would make things less troublesome all the way around. It really is an olive branch, I think. Seriously, what else do you think should be on the list? BrandonYusufToropov 19:27, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I hear what you're saying. I'm going to go ahead and develop a list and talk about your concerns with Striver, inshaAllah. BrandonYusufToropov 21:44, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you!

Thank you for your nice words about the Rashidi article, I´m still working a bit on it, but I think I have the main parts (that I can contribute) done. I just learned recently that Madawi Al-R. is a woman! (As you can understand: I´m not too familiar with Arabic/Arabic names) I don´t have A History of Saudi Arabia easily available, nor the Explorers of Arabia from the Renaissance to the End of the Victorian Era (->i.e. not in a library in my town). However, I do have Palgrave, Charles Montagu Doughty, Anne Blunt and Gertrude Bell (among others). I plan, with time, to add a bit more of Palgrave and Doughty, as the articles about them are very slim. ( i.e. there "is great room for improvement", as the expression goes) (The Blunt and Bell -articles are not in such a dire need of improvement). Btw, I much appriciate what I have seen of your work when I have come across it. Keep up the good work! Regards from a fellow "bookaholic", Huldra 01:03, 4 November 2005 (UTC) PS: If you have time: could you take a look at Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/Ramallite?[reply]

Hi, the copy of Doughty I have here is Travels in Arabia Deserta; with a new preface by the author ; introduction by T. E. Lawrence, and all original maps, plans & illustrations. - One-vol. ed. London : Jonathan Cape, 1926. l.690 pages, pl. : ill., (1. ed. 1888.) (Reprinted 1930.)
I can also borrow (but from out-of town ( i.e it takes a few days)): Wanderings in Arabia : being an abridgement of Travels in Arabia Deserta / arr. with introd. by Edward Garnett. London, 1908. 2 vol.
The Palgrave book: Personal narrative of a year's journey through Central and Eastern Arabia: <1862-62> is printed London, 1908. 421 pages. (=The physical copy; I have just started reading it.)
The Anne Blunt book is from 1986, and the earliest Gertrude Bell is from 1927.
I´m not familiar with US copyrigh law, but around here I believe it is 70 years after the death of the author. So any author who died before 1935 is fair game.
I have been looking at the Distributed Proofreaders; I´m afraid I´m completely unfamiliar with them. I have heard about the Gutenberg project, but I have never used it. I´m spoiled: I have 2 quite good librarys close by: the city library + the University library. Both are long established: i.e: many, many nice old books...And now they are both on the net, which means that I can sit at home (or anywhere in the world!) and check if they have a certain book. If there is any old book you are interested in; please tell me. -I think I will email you more. Huldra 03:31, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

    re: Books wanted

Firstly: the search engine does not take "close" hits, i.e. you must be exact in your spelling and wording. E.g. I searched for Lane: Manners and Morals etc. and did not find any, however; with Manners and customs etc was differnt... (and I assume that it the one you want). Now for the result:

    • Lane: An account of the manners and customs of the modern Egyptians I have a 1842, a 1860 and a 1871 ed. available, but none of them in this town.
    • The Shahnama of Firdausi ; done into English by Arthur George Warner and Edmond Warner. London 1905-1925. 9 vol. available, but not in this town.
    • As for: Stein, Aurel: Explorations in Central Asia, 1906-08. 1909 Available, but not in this town. What is available in this town by Aurel Stein is:
      • Sand-buried ruins of Khotan : personal narrative of a journey of archæological & geographical exploration in Chinese Turkastan London 1903
      • Ruins of desert Cathay : personal narrative of explorations in Central Asia and westernmost China 2 vol. London 1912.
      • On ancient Central-Asian tracks : brief narrative of three expeditions in innermost Asia and North-Western China. London 1933
    • Landon, Letitia Elizbeth: The Venetian bracelet, the lost Pleiad : a history of the lyre and other poems. London 1829 (Available in my town)
    • Stretton, Hesba: lots, but in translation! In English only (on not in my town):
      • Enoch Roden's training London : Religious Tract Society, [1885].
      • Little Meg's children and ; Alone in London with illustrations by Harold Copping and Victor Prout. London : Religious Tract Society, [1892]

As for Mrs. Wood, Mrs. Braddon: I need their first names/or initials Well, this is a start Huldra 20:26, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I have too many projects to start a new one just now, if I start this it will be after Christmas. Also: I have a Mac, relatively new (bought in April). If I understand you correctly: if you scan the book, then that does not mean that you also have to copyedit it?
As for the books: I´m just telling you which are available so that you don´t buy the same books just in order to scan them.... that is probably unneccessary.
    The mrs Wood; is that "Mrs Henry Wood"? We have a lot of her books in my town;
    • East Lynne / Wood, Henry, Mrs. 1800 and 1863
    • The Channings : a story / Wood, Henry, Mrs. 1800
    • Verner's pride / Wood, Henry, Mrs. 1863
    • Trevlyn Hold, or, Squire Trevlyn's heir / Wood, Henry, Mrs. 1864
    • Told in the twilight / Wood, Henry, Mrs. 1875
    • Lost in the past, and other tales / Wood, Henry, Mrs. 1881
    • The story of Dorothy Grape and other tales / Wood, Henry, Mrs 1885
    • Roland Yorke : a sequel to "The Channing / Wood, Henry, Mrs 1896
    • Mrs. Halliburton's troubles / Wood, Henry, Mrs. 1900
    • Lord Oakburn's daughters / Wood, Henry, Mrs. 1903
..and is "mrs Braddon" the same as Braddon, Mary Elizabeth? We have a lot of her, too, in this town (she was also translated, btw):
    • Just as I am / Braddon, M.E. <18?>
    • Dead men's shoes / Braddon, M.E. <18?>
    • Lady Audley's secret / Braddon, M. E. 1862
    • Lucius Davoren or publicans and sinners / Braddon, M.E. 1873
    • Taken at the Flood : a novel / Braddon, M.E. 1874
    • The day will come : a novel / Braddon, M.E. 1889
    • Gerard or The world, the flesh, and the devil : a novel / Braddon, M.E. 1891
    • Thou art the man : a novel / Braddon, M.E. London, <19-?>
    • The white House / Braddon, M.E. London, <19-?>
    • The doctor's wife : a novel / Braddon, Mary Elizabeth 1900
    • The rose of life / Braddon, M.E. 1907
If I´m to do this I would much prefer to scan in Palgrave or Aurel Stein; I got an overdose of the Victorian female writers years ago! ;-) Regards, Huldra 01:03, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, yes, you are a zealot! ;-) ..but I believe zealots for a good cause is a very, very good thing ;-) Anyway: I hope I can get back to you over Christmas if I start on this project? I will probably not use it much here at home (I can borrow Burckhardt, for free, at the library...) However, I travel quite a lot, and after a few weeks/months travel I´m normally deperate for something to read. For my next major travel I had thought of getting an Ipod and load it with "sound-books" (i.e. people (=actors) reading the books). Loading up text-files could also be an idea. I´m planning a longer travel in West-Africa, and Mungo Parks books would be a perfect companion. Anyway, I´m signing out for tonight, regards, Huldra 02:05, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, that leaves Aurel Stein to me, I suppose? ;-) And yes; I have also half ruined myself on abebooks these last few years: a very nice way to get ruined, though... The one thing I´m not that pleased about abebooks is that there seem to be no fixed time when it is updated? The other "black hole" (for my money) on the internet is the Scandinavian version: www.antikvariat.net. It updates at midnight between Sunday/Monday each week (in about 5-10 minutes..) ...we are quite a few book-collectors in Scandinavia who sit around about this time each week frantically reloading..... ah well, just don't let the wikistress get to you. I have lots of uncontroversial little articles I can work on when I don't feel like facing the trolls, and they are actually quite rewarding. I see this as a long-term project, and most trolls lose interest after a while. Sure, there is an endless supply of new trolls, but so what. We shouldn't have the aim of eliminating all npov templates, but to cover as many obscure subjects yet uncovered on the Internet as we can. That said, I think Islam is in an admirable state, all things considered, I would even recommend it as a first overview on the topic. I don't care too much if and where the 'fastest growing' statement appears, and the important things the article gets right, thanks to you and another tireless few. My break was not wikistress related, btw, I had some RL things to address, but I only rarely have my blood pressure raised by WP issues anymore :) dab () 07:42, 8 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

What do you think? Relevant to Striver. Anyone could mark an article for uncontested deletion, whoever created it (or liked it) would have to defend it by moving it to a formal request for deletion.

People who can't keep track of and defend the hundreds of unencyclopedic, irrelevant articles they create would see them vanish, by default, within (5, 7, 14, number to be determined) days.

    About Ibn Baz

    Hello

It is not OK to judge me based on my editings, you can only discuss my editings. I am not removing items because they are critical of Ibn Baz (I left critical claims though i beleive it is not true). I was only reading and edited what I beleive is clearly incorrect or not suitable.

    - (On Ibn Baz article) I edited the sentence (Born in Riyadh, Najd, he was a Muslim scholar and a staunch opponent of Shias and Mut'ah. He introduced the Misyar marriage.) from the introductry paragragh. I beleive it shoud not be on the introductary paragragh. He was not particually known as "a stunch opponent of shias" (actually sheikh Saffar , the most prominent Shia sheikh in Saudi Arabia visited him two times and described him as moderate [2] ) . And what the hell Mutah has to do with Ibn Baz to be on the introduction, it has never been an issue with Bin Baz. Sunnah scholars differ about Misyar marriage before Bin Baz born, he did not introduce it. He only was asked about it and he gave an answer (fatwa).

    - (On Islam and flat-earth theories article) I will write my reason for editing it after I see your response to what i have said above. I am not intending to re-edit , I hope you change your mind. Dy yol 03:53, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

    - I'm not asking you why you're not sympathetic to the Salafi POV, i'm saying that those reasons you mention should not make you bias on other issues and it's good that you recognize that.

    - A major accusation against Salafis is that they think that other people than them are misguided which take the form of calling others commiting shirk (this is a form of takfeer).

    - There is a major misconception that Salafis believe in Quranic literalism and this one of the reasons I made the editing on (Islam and flat-earth theories). Salafis POV is that the best people who can understand the Quran and Hadith are the people that the Quran was sent to them on there language (and those people are the Salaf). It is not an issue of litralism. When God says "God always with you" on Arabic language, a simple Arabic man doesn't understand it litrally, while some Sufis like Ibn Arabi understands it litrally to use it as a proof for the Unity of Being.

So Salafis say that knowing the language and figures that Arabs at the time of the prophet use is important to understand Quran. And I think you agree when you say "We need more Arabic-speakers on Wikipedia to help with the Islam-related articles".

    - And by the way, there is no Quranic ayah that can be interpreted litrally as "the sun revolves around the earth". The ayah that Ibn Baz rely on can be reads as "And the sun runs to a specific destination, such is the design of the Noble, the Knowledgeable " 36:38 . So when people asked Ibn Baz about people who say that the sun is static and the earth is revolves around it, Bin Baz issued a fatwa that any person says that the sun is static is kafir. And we know for sure by science that the sun is not static. Dy yol 05:09, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well I'll look over it a few more times and also keep it on my watchlist. I know the basics of the Shia/Sunni schism, of course, but I don't have a good enough grasp of the nuances of their theological differences to wade confidently into most issues of content. So it's likely that many of the underlying distortions will escape my notice. I'll do what I can, though. Babajobu 22:21, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Did I say being a Jew was bad, or are you trying to direct slanderous attention agaisnt me now? (Not cool. and Not buddhist). *sighs* Hi. could you look at my edits here and see what you think. Here is my change and he undid that... it's just bad style and I was accused of trying to hide something. It's really kind of ridiculous. gren グレン 08:34, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I also created Hisba because I was browsing FR wikipedia and I saw it... it seemed important (and was on Islam template)... I am not good enough to translate more... and I don't know of the concept really... unless it's something different in English. If you knoe anything about could you tell me? gren グレン 10:03, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

    Hawaii

"that "footer" gives undue prominence to an extreme political view" (re your revert of my edit to Hawaii)

Hello! Regarding the Legal status of Hawaii footer, I think it would be fairer to say that Hawaiian nationalism is a minority point of view that nevertheless is of considerable significance in day-to-day political discussions in Hawai‘i. Unavoidably, what is "extreme" and what is "undue prominence" here are subjective judgment calls about which editors can certainly honestly disagree. The point is not to let our own U.S.-shaped mindframe bias our judgment, just as we would hope mainland Chinese editors don't just automatically bar Tibet/Taiwan independence views from being noticeably displayed in Chinese Wikipedia.

The template was displayed for comment for over three weeks on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Hawaii page. Only two editors (one not even a member of the project) reacted. One engaged in spirited editing and discussion of the more extensive sidebar version of the template. The other left a note on my talk page saying "nice job". At no time did anyone say they would object to either template being deployed, so I am a little perplexed.

    Help! What's your suggestion? I'm open to discussion. -- IslandGyrl 20:29, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

    Battle of Khanwa

Hi Zora, I write to you as I find only your message on the talk-page of Battle of Khanwa. I have basically re-written the page and made it cohernt, but it would be nice if we could have some reliable references that cover the profusion of information available on the page. Could you help? - ImpuMozhi
