JONAS is a Disney Channel Original Series made by Mantis Productions and It's a Laugh Productions that premiered May 2, 2009, starring the Jonas Brothers.[2] The series is about the members of the fictional band "Jonas" having to cope with being pop stars while trying to live an ordinary life.[1][3]

The series premiered on Disney Channel on May 2, 2009.[3] The first preview of the series was aired on Disney Channel on January 1, 2009 as part of a compilation of new programs that will air on the channel in 2009.

Overview

JONAS follows fictional brothers Joe, Nick, and Kevin Lucas, the three members of the extremely popular rock band JONAS, as they try to maintain lives that are as ordinary as possible despite their fame.[4] The brothers live in a converted fire station in New Jersey with their mother Sandy, father Tom, and younger brother Frankie. The band's name comes from the street they live on: Jonas Street. The Lucases have known Stella Malone, their personal stylist and friend, since Stella was five years old. The Lucas brothers and Stella attend Horace Mantis High School, a fictional private school, along with Stella's best friend Macy, JONAS' self-proclaimed biggest fan.

Casting

Nicole Anderson & Demi Lovato also auditioned for the role of Stella but were rejected in favor of Chelsea Staub.[7] When the series began filming the first season, the producers decided to write in a best friend role for Stella, and offered the role of "Macy" to Staub's real life best friend Anderson.[7]

Production

The series is produced by It's a Laugh Productions and Mantis Productions in association with Disney Channel. The pilot was filmed in 2007 but because of the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike, the series was put on hold. The original shooting date had been set in January 2009, but was pushed back to September 2009.[8] The series premiered on Disney Channel on May 2, 2009, and became available on demand starting May 25, 2009 [9]

JONAS is the first live-action DCOS since Phil of the Future to not be filmed in front of a live audience, or have a laugh track.[10] The series is set in New Jersey and shot in Los Angeles. They live in an old firehouse that has been converted into a home.[1]

Development

The original story line for the series was entitled J.O.N.A.S, an acronym which stood for "Junior Operatives Networking As Spies". The original concept had been about the Jonas Brothers living a double life as spies.[11] Chelsea Staub described it as, "like The Monkees and a little of bit of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. There's going to be fun action sequences and still be a sitcom."[12]
