Sarni is a city and a municipality in Betul district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census[1],sarni is one of the beautiful places in Madhya Pradesh, had a population of 95,015. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Sarni has an average literacy rate of 79%, much higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 82%, and female literacy is 75%. As per the survey, an amazing fact about Sarni is that its municipality has only 1 person residing below poverty line. Although a small place, it has a very high standard of living. In Sarni, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age. It has one of the major power producing plant running on thermal, and hydro modes. The major attraction in this place is the hill top situated "Mathaar Dev" Temple, and the bird's eye view of the city from there. The whole city seems to be surrounded by the Satpura ranges of mountains, comprising the tranquility of the huge reservoir. Annual week long fair surrounding the occasion of "Makar Sankranti" in the month of January signifies the devotion, enjoyment and spirit of the people in Sarni. Another Important Place to visit is the Satpura Dam. The ride to the dam on the ghats is very exhilarating and Mesmerizing and is as good as any hill station. A boat ride in the out channel is also advisable for people who like solitude. The food in the dhabas on the dumua road is the best you can get in that place. In terms of abroad, many people from Sarni now a days taking their higher education or working in different countries. As a software Engg, Technicians,Civil Engg, Doctors like so many people serve their work in different countries.

Satpura thermal power plant

It is the biggest power house in MP with 9 units, interms (badword) of electricity generation and is the main reason for much Sarni is a very managed city by MPPGCL.

It is the best example of industrial region with eco friendliness. There are so many place to visit in Sarni like shopping centre, Jamun jiria, chhota mathardev, and small beaches of tawa river and power plant. There are so many places near to sarni like chhota mahadev and series of satpura mountains.

In terms of education, even though being so small place it has got many educated people. Students in large numbers qualify JEE ( joint entrance exam) conducted by IITs, Engineering Exams like AIEEE (All India Engineering Entrance Exams), MP-PET (Madhya Pradesh Pre-Engineering Test) and get admission in pioneering institutions like IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, BITS PILANI and good Engineering colleges in and outside M.P. Also Students qualify PMT (Pre Medical Test) Exams from this great place. A boy named ASHWIN DESHMUKH is studying at SAINIK SCHOOL REWA. In sports like athletics, badminton, cricket, football there are many good players who were selected in nationals and go further for sports meet held in different cities of India. Parents here are also aware of their children in large numbers. This small place has produced many intelligent people and sports people. Nearest railway station is situated at Ghoradongri 18 km away from Sarni on Itarsi-Nagpur railway line. Nearest Airports are Bhopal& Nagpur.

Mathardev mela- The festival and fair of makar sankranti

History

Mathardev baba – A saint living on the mathardev pahari ( a mountain in range of satpura mountain region named on his name) in 1950’s devotee of  god shivji made a temple ,where people of all religion and caste come to worship god shivji, when mathardev baba died ,some men from sarni with nagar palika and with financial help from MPEB board started the fair to celebrate the festival in 1978 and named it mathardev mela on the name of  the saint – mathardev baba to commemorate him.

Mathardev mela is organised by the mathardev mela samiti with the help of nagar palika (Municipal Corporation) sarni every year in the month of January to celebrate makar sankranti. A fair organised for about 10 days which is the best time for sarni as the winter season ends and autumn starts. Traders across the region come to sarni to sell religious items, artefacts , saris ,bangles, toys, utensils food now a days bikes , cars, computers , mobiles etc. various rides (jhulas) are really popular at the fair like dragon jhula.

The fair is immensely popular in the youth of the region along with children’s and seniors, that is why young and old people across the areas like betul ,balaghat, nagpur, amla, chhindwara,khandwa, Bhopal , itarsi hoshangabad, indore, gwalior US, UK, Australia, gulf come to see, celebrate and worship.


Makar sankranti According to the lunar calendar, the sun moves from the Tropic of Cancer to the Tropic of Capricorn or from Dakshinayana to Uttarayana, in the month of Poush in mid-January.

This end of the winter solstice also coincides with the harvest season and cessation of the northeast monsoon in South India. The movement of the earth from one zodiac sign into another is called Sankranti, and is celebrated as Makar, or Uttarayana, Sankranti, or Lohri, in the North, and as Pongal in the South.

The festival is also called Til Sankranti or Kichri Sankranti, after its main ingredient or preparation
