Scottish football league system
The Scottish football league system (or pyramid) is not as well developed as most other football league systems, consisting of only two leagues made up of just four divisions. It is also unusual in that it has no regional leagues. Leagues do exist outside the pyramid (most notably the Highland League), but there is no regular promotion or relegation between them and the pyramid.
The Current System
The current system has been in place since the creation of the Scottish Premierleague at the start of the 1998-1999 season. For each division, its official name, sponsorship name (which often differs radically from its official name) and number of clubs is given:
Level |
League/Division |
1 |
Scottish Premierleague (SPL) |
2 |
Scottish Football League First Division |
3 |
Scottish Football League Second Division |
4 |
Scottish Football League Third Division |
