Nicholas Andry

Nicholas Andry or Nicolas Andry (1658-1742) was widely regarded as the grandfather of orthopedics.
He coined the word ‘orthopaedia’ in a book he published in 1741 entitled ‘Orthopaedia: or, The Art of Correcting and Preventing Deformities in Children. At that time he was the Professor of Medicine at the University of Paris and also Senior Dean of the Faculty of Physick[1].
Nicholas Andry was born in 1658 in Lyon, France to a family of poor merchants [2]. He studied theology but in 1690, went to study medicine at the Faculty of Reirns (part of the Faculty of Paris). He had three marriages and had a daughter by his last wife.
He died in Paris on 13 March 1742 at the age of 84.
