David "Nino" Rodriguez (b. September 18, 1977 in El Paso, Texas) is a Mexican American heavyweight boxer with a statistically impressive 32-0 (30 KOs, most in the first round) Currently ranked #24 American Heavyweight according to boxrec
Bio
After an amateur career under the tutelage of the late Rocky Galarza and coach Tom McKay of El Paso, Texas that began with two Las Cruces 'Chili Festival' victories and championships (back to back years) over more experienced foes, Rodriguez had a limited amateur career sustaining only a loss by decision when he was down with the flu. ("The sweet science.com" denies amateur experience, Fightnews claims his record was 8-2) the muscular heavy-handed 6’5” 240 lbs Mexican Rodriguez turned pro in 1998. In 2003 he beat a certain Tommy Connelly (record 8-1) for the Texas state title, in 2004 Cruz Quintana (record 10-1). In 2005 he scored his only points win over just 4 rounds a distance which is very uncommon for a fighter who is a pro for seven years. On the undercard of Holyfield-Savarese in 2007 he managed to beat huge (276 lbs, 6’9”) southpaw Rick Dyer who just like him owned an inflated record at 13-0(13 Kos) coming in, however, none of Dyer's 13 opponents so far had a winning record. The TV commentators portrayed Rodriguez as a top prospect in their coverage and some websites (see link) have touted him, he was listed as #9 by ESPN.com as a heavyweight to watch under 30.
He fought on September 12, 2009 against Robert Davis who he dispatched in three rounds.
He has scored 24 first round knockouts so far.
Rodriguez claimed the North American Boxing Organization (N.A.B.O.) Heavyweight title March 14, 2009 with a 7th round stoppage of Manuel Alberto Pucheta.
Currently ranked #1, WBO Latino, #10 NABF, #12 WBA, #15 NABO.
Rodriguez' professional coach is 'Louie Burke'from Las Cruces, New Mexico. His manager is Bob Spagnola of Houston, Texas.
