Sharma (Sanskrit शर्म, Hindi शर्मा, Template:Lang-as) is a name used in the Indian subcontinent, frequently as a Brahmin surname or given name.[1][2][3] As a noun in Sanskrit, Sharma has various positive connotations, such as "bliss", "happiness", "shelter" and "protection."[1]

In much of North India (includes Assam) and Nepal, it is regarded as a family name, though it does not necessarily denote a unique paternal lineage. However, it is not uncommon to find 'Sharma' used as a middle name in some parts of North India and Nepal (for example Tanka Prasad Sharma Kadel). In South and South-central India, it represents a first-name or given-name. For instance, Janamanchi Seshadri Sarma's surname is Janamanchi and sharma is part of the given name of Mayurasharma.

The name SharmaHa (one of the noun forms of Sharma/Sharman) is written as शर्मः in Sanskrit and शर्मा in Hindi.[4] An alternative version of the name used in the city of Varanasi and the Indian states of Assam and Andhra Pradesh is Sarma.[5] Some Assamese people also use Sarmah.[5]

Despite its association with Brahmins, however, all Sharmas are not Hindu. 'Sharma' also sometimes occurs as a surname for Christians[citation needed], Jains[citation needed] and Buddhists. It is not only a Brahmin title, some Sharmas fall under the class of ironsmiths and goldsmiths.[citation needed][6][7]

According to the Dictionary of American Family Names, Oxford University Press, ISBN 0-19-508137-4, Indian: Hindu (Brahman) name from Sanskrit šarma ‘joy’, ‘shelter’. It is regarded as a prestigious name and as such has been adopted in recent times in various non-Brahman communities. .

According to Indian sociologist, S. Devadas Pillai, [1] in his book Indian Sociology through Ghurye, A Dictionary, "The suffix Sharma indicates that the chanter is a Brahman...."
