6teen is an animated series targeting youths of all ages. The series chronicles the adventures of six sixteen year old friends at their local mall. The series format is quite similar to a sitcom, with the concept particularly resembling that of Friends. The show was created and edited by Toronto-based writers and producers Tom McGillis and Jennifer Pertsch of Fresh Animation Ltd. It is produced by Nelvana Ltd.

The cgi animation style means the characters have less resemblance to cartoons than is usual (sometimes the animation looks as if it is affiliated with Macromedia Flash), and instead are considered to be closer to fashion designs. Each character is tailored to resemble a range of subcultures or subtypes of teenagers, including even a grunge/skater as the comic relief. The cartoon deals with the lives of teenaged friends working at their first jobs in a mall, and targets issues that teens deal with on a daily basis, while still remaining entertaining. The result is that the teenaged target audience can relate to the characters and their lives at the mall.

A modern animation program called Harmony (Previously known as Symphony) from Toon Boom Animation is used in the production of the series. This newest technology allows the animators to make show's production much quicker, but also allows to include many details. There's also a visible change in season two- animation is much smoother, as the producers got more funds for using Harmony.

The show is Canadian-produced and this is hinted at in certain products the characters find in the mall, such as a jersey for the Toronto Maple Leafs, an ice hockey team. In one episode, a character went to the Calgary Stampede, and reference is made in the Christmas special to the Boxing Day holiday observed in Canada. The money is also Canadian as shown when red and blue bills were used, and when all the characters said they'd each pay a dollar for a bet and used loonies.

The show is now airing not only in Canada (on Teletoon), but also in Israel, Poland (on ZigZap), South America, and the US (on Nickelodeon).

Main characters

6teen centers around six main characters who work in the Galleria Mall, as well as several secondary characters. It is rumoured the mall is based on the West Edmonton Mall, but some other promo materials said about Toronto Eaton Centre.

Jen
  • Jen Masterson – An athletic girl who used to work at The Big Squeeze, before giving the job to Caitlin. She enjoys working at The Penalty Box, but usually winds up in the penalty box, the store’s method of punishment. She's the sporty one of the group, and is considered by the others as the lawful and good one. She used to date Coach Halder’s son Corey, was a fake date to Jude, and on one Valentine's Day, she became so desperate that she fought Caitlin over Darth. She has an ongoing rivalry with her sister, Courtney, who used to baby sit the guys when they were kids. She just recently became Jonesy's step-sister after her mother married his father.

He used to work in the country section of Spin This. He freaks out every time he hears country music, drinking four coffees a day, listening to white noise, and not sleeping for fear of having "the dream" ("The one where the cowboy thinks I ran off with his wife to the city and now he wants to kick my a—"). He used to be involved with his boss Serena, but she broke up with him via a text message. Because of that unhappy relationship, he was fired in season two, and later worked with Jude in Underground Videos, the least popular place in the mall. But he later got fired after his coffee got spilt on Wayne's "Space Samurai Warriors" DVD and now has a cool job as an assistant manager at Burger McFlipster's, where his singing and serving has really got a lot of ladies the real attention Wyatt deserves.

To make things worse, the only job she could get was at The Big Squeeze. She had trouble working there at first, but has finally mastered the blender. She feels she has much to give to the world, such as her Chick Flick DVD Library, or her index of all pink shades of lipstick. She has dated Kyle Donaldson, fought Jen over Darth one Valentine's Day, and is currently looking for a boyfriend. She has so far broken up with Talon, Tricia's Old Boyfriend Zane, Wade, Billy, Josh, and Dustin. Whenever she cries, the mascara wears off and leaves streaks across her cheek. Needless to say, the gang is appalled by that appearance of her.

File:Jude.png
Jude
  • Jude Lizowski – Considered the comic relief of the group. He used to work at Stick-It until season 2 and was his own boss, so he wasn't too keen on cleaning up his fast food restaurant. Ron, the security guard, and guys from Health Care closed Stick-It immediately after discovering the mess. He is usually skating on his board or creating new and interesting Stick-Its (recently was his mushroom pizza Stick-It). Jude hates all music other than rock, saying about other music: "that stuff like, sucks the life out of you, dude." He's got a tattoo on his... rear end and dared to jump naked with a parachute. He thought it would be easier for him if he just didn’t go to his final exams, but with help from his friends, was able to pass them all. He has been involved with a talking chair named Betty and went out with Starr for one night, which ended when he accidentally vomited in her mouth. He finally managed to date with her successfully, but later on, Starr became a goth and they are no longer an item. Jude now works in Underground Videos.

File:Nikki.png
Nikki
  • Nikki Wong – A rebel-type girl who is arguably the most sensible of the group. She works at the Khaki Barn and has dubbed the other three girls working there "The Clones". Once she was a member of their group, but the others saved her from a life "where individuality is overrated". She has a love-hate relationship with Jonsey, they always have this tension going around, especially after their first date in episode "Clonesy" (Season 1). In season 2 they are actually dating for about three months and try to develop their relationship more.

Jonesy
  • Jonesy Garcia – He is fired in every single episode, sometimes fired within three minutes. The numerous stores he's worked at include The Khaki Barn, The Penalty Box, Stereoshack, Things That Beep, Albatross and Finch, the secret shopper, Super Terrific Happy Sushi, and Underground Videos. He also worked at Burger McFlipsters, but he later opted to quit after his singing to the lady customers was horrible. He always tries to score dates with any attractive girl, and usually winds up dumped or punched. Jonesy and Nikki have an on again, off again relationship that sometimes leads to awkward moments. After Nikki broadcasted his wedgie all over the mall, he showed the gang his picture of her in first grade tap dancing. He began dating Nikki in season 2 for approximately three months and their relationship still maintains its tension. He recently became Jen's step-brother after his father married her mother. Recurring Characters

  • Starr/Nebula - Jude's vegetarian ex-girlfriend who works at Vegan Island. She hooks up with Jude because her personality is similar to his in terms of their taste and eccentricity. Jude accidentally vomits in her mouth on their first date after eating some rancid Chocolates. It takes her months to forgive him, and even longer for Jude to ask her on a second date but it all works out well. Both share an interest in watching fountain diving and both have a... unique way of communicating with others. She later becomes a goth and changes her name to Nebula. She is opt to break up with Jude, but promises they would always be friends.

Character quote: "I'm a goth now!"

  • The Clones(Kristen, Chrissie and Kirsten) - Nikki's co-workers at the Khaki Barn and her worst nightmares. Chrissy, Kirsten, and Kristen are all intimidated by Nikki. Chrissie is the assistant manager of Khaki Barn and Kirsten and Kristen are Nikki's co-workers. Once, Chrissie tried to brainwash Nikki in to being more Khaki, which in the end failed and rebel-girl returned to her normal self.

Character quote: "Have a Khaki Day!"

  • Ron the Rent-a-cop - Retail Operations Enforcer for the Galleria Mall. He sees an enemy in every person under twenty, and is a true nemesis of The Gang. Try as they might, the group can't seem to get rid of Ron, who puts out tons of loitering and disruptiveness tickets. He's a Vietnam War veteran, and sometimes we see him in some bizzare retrospections from the war. He has a northern European accent.

Character quote: "I remember the war, soldier! I had to eat dirt and worms to stay alive! You have anything else to say, maggot?"

  • Coach Halder - Jen's huge boss at the Penalty Box who gives out "penalties" for the smallest infractions. Says (actually- yells) "Masterson!" a lot and is a regular at Grind Me's poetry reading. Had his son working at the store before, but after Jen broke up with him he was transferred to another store. He's not beyond giving himself penalties and pushups. He has one weakness as he is terrified of mice.

Character quote: "MASTERSON!"

  • Courtney - Jen's older and hotter sister, who came back home from college (she was thrown out). Guys adore her looks and girls love to listen to her boyfriend adventures, so Jen feels abandoned by the rest of the gang everytime Courtney steps into the Mall. She has a good reason to fell like that- Courtney is a famous friend and boyfriend stealer. Despite their differences, they really love each other, like family should.

Character quote: "Now that everyone knows that you have your own boobs, finding a boyfriend shouldn't be a problem."

  • Darth - The geeky, light saber-wielding employee of Stereo Shack. Was embarrassed by Jonsey in front of the entire school in sixth grade, who gave Darth an atomic wedgie. Darth tried to get revenge on Jonesy and he managed to tape it on a Video. Jonesy later on regained his pride by giving another wedgie to the poor geek. Darth also has a huge crush on Nikki.

Character quote: "Would you like me to explain the story for you? I'll use small words so you'll be sure to understand."

  • Tricia - Caitlin's Ex-Friend and Shopping Buddy. She tries to ruin her ex-friend's life any time, anywhere. First she ran against Caitlin in The Khaki Girl contest and then she downloaded the movie of Caitlin walking around on the beach in her bikini with toilet paper sticking out of it(eeeew!). Tricia can't stand it when Caitlin has a boyfriend that she used to like. When she appears, it's almost certain that she will think of some evil sabotage plot.

Character quote: "See ya later, Lemonhead!"

  • Serena - Wyatt's ex-girlfriend and ex-boss. He's obsessed with her and tries to get her back, but all he does makes her angry, and she ends up firing him and now (season 2) is going out with Wyatt's former co-worker Chad from Spin This.

Character quote: "Sorry Wyatt, it's all mater of... maturity."

  • Chad- Serena's boyfriend. They were a couple before Wyatt was hired and fell in love with his boss. Works at Spin This and was Wyatt's friend and mentor there until he hooked up with Serena again. Serena thinks that Chad is mature (cool and relaxed) but Wyatt just thinks he's in a coma. The audience then gets an idea of Chad's "maturity" when he's motionless and in a trance like a stoner. A projectile hits his head but he vaguely makes a remark on it.

Character quote: "Mad ugly chapeau garçon!"

  • Wayne - The manager (and later, the owner) of The Underground, a video store that specializes in independent films, he's Jude and Wyatt's boss after the two of them are fired from their former jobs. He has a metallic retainer sticking out of his mouth. Wayne is sarcastic and generally bad-tempered, but happens to know exactly what film a customer should see. He can't stand Jonesy or anything Jonesy thinks is cool.

Character quote: "This movie meant more to me than your life!"

  • Hiro - The owner and head chef of "Super Terrific Happy Sushi", he acts like a samurai. He was once Jonesy's boss and taught Jonesy samurai-like things, allowed Jude and Starr to perform "fish theatre" at the restaurant's aquarium, and taught the guys how to deal with the girls when they were pmsing.

Character quote: "Ah so! Baka no teenaga!" (meaning 'Idiotic Teenager')

  • Stanley's Mom (a.k.a. Yummy Mummy) and Stanley - A very attractive vixen of a woman (so called MILF) and her son, a boy who likes to fire nerf-balls at the teens at the mall, especially near the fountain and at Caitlin when she's at The Lemon.

Character quote: "Can you wait here with my little stanley while I make myself pretty, tiger?"

  • Jason- a lead singer in the band DawgToy. Seen only once in person, when DawgToy came to the Mall, but then reappearing in many episodes as cardboard figure in music shop, on t-shirts or on posters. In every shape and form he's admired by the girls.

Character quote: "Anything for you."

  • Tim- the head manager of Burger McFlipster's. Has a down baritone-like voice. He hired Wyatt and was impressed that his singing to the customers (especially with the young ladies) got huge sale increases.

Character quote: "Singing for customers is stupid. In Burger McFlipsters, we sing for the meat."

  • Lydia- A red-headed girl who's crazy about boys, one in particular- Jonesy. She's nearly psychotic about him and only thanks to Nikki, Jonesy got rid of her. But not for long, as she came back, and found a new obsession- Wyatt. But she mistook Jude and Wayne for him, which is nearly impossible. Creepy girl, period.

Character quote: "Every minute we're apart, is an eternity."

  • Julie- She works at Wonder Taco and wears huge braces. If the customers try to make fun of her as they order tacos, she'd spit in the tacos she will give to them. She also has a crush on Darth.

Character quote: "Hey, boys."

  • Christo & Blade -Two jocks working in "Things that beep" and later in "Taj Mahome Videos". They are the type of guys you call "Popular", get chicks and throw parties for everyone who are cool enough to be invited. They have ongoing rivalry with the gang, especially with Jonesy.

Character Quote: "It's time for our cheer up song"

  • Stone -A nice-looking guy who works at Grind me coffee shop. He has negative, nasty, and sarcastic personality, which makes him just like the male version of Nikki. Even if Nikki has a crush on him, she doesn't admit it, but instead he admits first. They go out on a date which runs really smoothly. In other words, he's perfect for her! He was also nicknamed the "grumpy hot guy" by Jen and Caitlin who made a hobby of going boy-crazy on him. However, after he heard his ex-girlfriend returned, he opted to break up with Nikki.

Character Quote: "Don't tell me that the sharpest tongue in the mall has nothing to say."

  • Sharmane -The manager of the coffee shop, 'Grind Me'. She is the best friend of Serena's which is why Wyatt becomes afraid of her after Serena dumps him. She made the Grind Me Poetry club which is very popular for all the workers at the Galleria mall.

Chracter Quote: "Bean coffee, tall cup, extra foam. That sounds like somebody else's order."

Trivia

  • The final version of 6teen differs greatly from one which was introduced and still remains on Nelvana webpage. Visit the link to see how the original design and characters' personalities have changed.
  • The names of characters are changed in French dubbed version, also airing in Canada. They are:
    • Jen - Julie
    • Caitlin - Katherine
    • Jude - Hugo
    • Wyatt - Vincent
    • Jonesy - Costarica

Only Nikki's name stays the same in both versions

  • The original name for the TV series was "The Mall" but was later changed
  • Ron the security guard is based on Christopher Walken. Not only he looks very similar to that actor, but his past in the Vietnam is a spoof of Walken's role in The Deer Hunter, and the way Ron speaks is based on many villians played by Walken. Also, true Chris Walken's name is Ronald.
  • Wayne from the Underground Videos might be considered as a mix of Randal Graves and Dante Hicks, characters from cult movie Clerks. He looks a lot like Dante and complains as much. On the other hand- he's sarcastic, unpleasant toward others, works in the Video Store and has his own taste in movies, just like Randal.
  • There are two 6teen DVD's.
    • -Take This Job and Aqueexe It. (Available)
    • -Idol Time At The Mall. (In Stores April 11th)
