She has declared her nomination for the election to the Leader of the Labour Party in Scotland.
Career
She first became active in Glasgow University Labour Club. She spent a year at Jordanhill Teacher Training College, during which time she became a member of the National Committee of the National Organisation of Labour Students. She worked as a teacher for a number of years (initially in Rothesay) and in 1999 was elected to the Scottish Parliament for the Glasgow Pollok constituency. In 2003 she successfully defended the seat in the face of a tough challenge from the then Scottish Socialist Party convenor Tommy Sheridan, and was re-elected in 2007. She became Deputy Minister for Communities in the Scottish Executive in October 2004, and moved to become Deputy Justice Minister in November 2006 until the dissolution of Parliament in anticipation of the 2007 election. In September 2008 she was elected Deputy Leader of Labour in the Scottish Parliament.
