Maxthon is a free web browser for Microsoft Windows. The company’s desktop browser, Maxthon 3, supports both the Trident and the WebKit rendering engines.[7]

Since its release in 2003, Maxthon has attracted a global community of users. Each month more than 130,000,000 people use Maxthon's web browser in more than 140 countries around the world. The company has also partnered with several technology brands, including an alliance with Microsoft at the Consumer Electronics Show. [8] Maxthon is a two-time winner of a WebWare 100 Award, in both 2008 [9] and 2009.[10] , as well as a member of PCWorld’s 100 Best Products of 2011.

History

According to Jeff Chen, CEO of Maxthon International, Maxthon was based on MyIE, which was created by a fellow Chinese programmer who wanted to customize the Internet Explorer web browser.[11][12] Chen continued developing MyIE, which resulted in the 2002 release of MyIE2.[13] MyIE2 grew rapidly, with users around the world contributing various features while assisting with debugging the software. In 2003, MyIE2 was renamed Maxthon after a suggestion from an Irish member of the My IE2 community.[11][14]

Chen founded Mysoft International Limited in Hong Kong in 1999 to distribute the MyIE browser.[15] In 2007, Maxthon became the first browser to offer sandboxed tabs for added security. In 2006, Maxthon also became the first browser to offer cloud-based services for syncing bookmarks and history. By 2009, Maxthon was one of the twelve browsers Microsoft chosen to be a non-microsoft option at BrowserChoice.eu, a website that allows users of Microsoft Windows residing in the European Economic Area to choose which default web browser they would like to use on their computer. BrowserChoice.eu is one of the conditions of the anti-trust settlement between Microsoft and the European Union.[16]

In 2010, Maxthon surpassed 500,000,000 downloads.

Partnerships

In 2006, Maxthon struck partnerships with Google, Microsoft, Baidu and Yandex to offer their search engines in its browser, in China and globally.[17] Most web browsers derive the majority of their income from search arrangements where the browser gets a revenue share for search queries and click-throughs on search advertising. In China, Maxthon has partnerships with major internet and software providers including: Sina, Taobao, Kingsoft and other web game and content providers. In 2011 Maxthon forged partnerships with Fuhu, Ask.com, IAC, Kingston and Mobihand.

Version 1.x

Maxthon version 1 was a continuation of MyIE2 and is an Internet Explorer shell that implemented a tabbed browser using the Trident layout engine which Microsoft introduced with Internet Explorer 4.[18] As such, version 1 was compatible with every version of Windows from Windows 95 to Windows 7. [19] The latest release of the Classic Version is 1.6.7.35. It functions properly with Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, 7 and 8 on Microsoft Windows XP Home, XP Professional, and all releases of Windows Vista and Windows 7. There are a number of add-ons available for Maxthon Classic[20] , more are available through discussion forums.[21] Specific threads may provide direct download links as well.[22] Some add-ons are build specific, but when that is the case, a clear indication of compatibility can often be found. Downloads of earlier releases are available for testing and/or general use, should issues with the latest releases arise.

Maxthon 3 was released in the fall of 2010 after a beter period of 8 months. It has both Trident engine and a Webkit engine, otherwise called "Dual Display Engines.” In the browser, these two engines operate on demand, where one is the default. Trident is used for older, often Mircrosoft – compliant websites and will render some items like shopping carts and log-in pages correctly whereas WebKit often will Not. Conversely, for most modern (HTML 3+) web pages WebKit is the most effective browser at rendering the page as it is desired to look and work by the page desiger. WebKit is the default rendering engine of Maxthon 3. Additionally, Maxthon 3 has many pre-loaded features, including:
