A Barnstar!
The Tireless Contributor Barnstar

For your tireless efforts in implementing a fully detailed yet minimalist results table for all 150 federal divisions (the fact I cannot be bothered checking each and every one goes to show what a monsterous task it would be). I think everyone appreciates the work you've put in to WikiProject Australian politics so far, there's far too few of them these days! Timeshift 05:28, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

For all the outstanding work and long hours you continue to put in to so many aspects of Australian Politics on Wikipedia... you truly would be near, if not the best, OzPol contributor in terms of the volume of work you put out. Especially for doing individual seat results for the South Australian state election, 2010, I award you this barnstar! One day if it takes your fancy, you should nominate for admin if you fancy getting in to that side of Wikipedia! Work output aside, you definately have all the qualities! Thanks for continuing to be a pleasure to work with! Timeshift (talk) 12:14, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

Thoughts

  • The recent Chelsea Manning case, which I did not participate in, has crystallised my problems with WP:COMMONNAME. As intended I think it's a good policy, ensuring that, say, Tony Blair is not at Anthony Blair and medical conditions are at recognisable names. But sadly, in recent years it has morphed into an all-consuming monster, poking its nose in places it doesn't belong; in particular, it has been decided by many, many people that "common name" trumps accuracy. I also see this in Côte d'Ivoire, Myanmar and Timor-Leste. We should reflect common usage, yes, but equally we should not be sheep, and we shouldn't reflect common usage if it is demonstrably and verifiably wrong, as it is in all four of the cases I've mentioned.
