Roc Nation, LLC is an American entertainment company founded by Jay-Z. The label is operated under Sony Music Entertainment[1] and distributed by Universal Music Group.[2]

History

In April 2008, Live Nation partnered with Jay-Z to create Roc Nation.[3][4][5] Roc Nation has a record label named Star Roc and an entertainment company named Takeover Roc Nation, located in the United Kingdom, and it also covers Europe; the company was distributed by Sony Music Entertainment at first, and partners with Live Nation.[6][7]

In 2008 American hip hop artist Jay-Z and Norwegian songwriters-producers Mikkel S. Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen of the production duo Stargate formed the label "Star Roc". The label is a 50/50 partnership between Stargate and Jay-Z's Roc Nation entertainment company, which he signed in the same year to Live Nation. StarRoc is headquartered at Jay-Z's recording studio, Roc the Mic, in Manhattan, New York City, United States.[8][9][10][11]

In early April 2013, Roc Nation formed a new sports management division, Roc Nation Sports.[12] The new company will act as an intermediary between high-profile athletes and the sporting teams and companies seeking to capitalize on their abilities, just as any traditional sports management agency would. It was also announced that week that Jay-Z signed a multi-year deal with Universal Music Group to distribute all future Roc Nation albums.[2]
