Drishyam (Template:Lang-ml) is a 2013 Malayalam thriller film written and directed by Jeethu Joseph and starring Mohanlal and Meena in the lead roles.[1] The film is produced by Antony Perumbavoor under the banner Aashirvad Cinemas. Mohanlal appears as a common farmer while Meena plays his wife.The film's music is composed by Vinu Thomas and background score is done by Anil Johnson. Cinematography is handled by Sujith Vassudev.The film was shot in Thodupuzha and nearby locations.[2] Upon release, the film received rave reviews from critics as well as viewers.

Plot

Georgekutty (Mohanlal) is an orphan, who has only passed class four. But he is involved in a number of enterprises. He runs a cable TV business and lives with his wife, Rani (Meena) and two daughters Anju (Ansiba), a Plus Two student, and Anu (Esther), a student of class eight, in a high range village in Idukki. When Varun (Roshan) walks in abruptly into their lives, the four of them and their togetherness are put to extreme test, in terrifying ways they have experienced never before. The film narrates how they overcome the crisis.

Critical reception

The film opened to magnificent critical response. Sify.com's reviewer gave the verdict "Excellent" and stated, "It is not often that you sit in a theatre with bated breath, never wanting to miss a moment of the film on screen. Writer director Jeethu Joseph’s Drishyam is one such film, a gripping tale that leaves you spellbound with its skillful craft."[3] Veeyen of Nowrunning.com rated the film 3/5 and commented, "In Drishyam Jeethu attempts a stunning mix of the real with the imaginary, and the result is an unpredictable cinematic artichoke that takes you by surprise at every turn."[4] Rating the film 3.5/5, Paresh C Palicha of Rediff.com said, "Drishyam can be credited for bringing Mohanlal back to form and pushing director Jeethu Joseph into the big league as he has made a cracker of a thriller."[5]

Theatrical response

Drishyam released on 19 December 2013, in 133 theatres.[6] The film has got very good response from the audience and has been already declared to the winning movie of the year.[7] Reports claim that Mohanlal has performed in an easy manner, which is the most positive factor about the movie.[8]
