Metalocalypse, originally titled Death Clock Metalocalypse and promoted as DethKlok Metalocalypse [1], is an animated television series on Adult Swim created by Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha. The show's first season comprises 20 episodes, each eleven minutes in length, the first of which premiered on the Adult Swim Fix on August 4, 2006 and on Adult Swim proper the following Sunday. The show is described as "Spinal Tap meets Scooby-Doo meets Norway."

Summary

From the Adult Swim website: "The world's most popular heavy metal band leaves a trail of mayhem and destruction wherever they go. The animated comedy, from co-creators and executive producers Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha, debuted on August 6 at 11:45 P.M. and feature ear-melting heavy metal and guest appearances by musicians like Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield of Metallica." According to Brendon Small, "The show is basically about a (half-American/half Norwegian) metal band that is about a million times bigger than The Beatles. But a million times more dangerous and a billion times more stupid. This show promises violent murder. Violent violent murder. And metal."

The Band

The names and positions of the members are as follows:

  • Guitar: Skwisgaar Skwigelf (Taller Than a Tree)
  • Guitar: Toki Wartooth (Not a Bumble Bee)
  • Bass: William Murderface (Murderface Murderface)
  • Drums: Pickles The Drummer (Doodily doo, ding-dong doodily doodily doo)
  • Vocals: Nathan Explosion

Promos

Two Promos began airing beginning July 15, 2006 on Adult Swim - they consist of the theme song with band member, Nathan Explosion driving a motorcycle with the other four members attached riding in sidecars. Nathan leaps from the cycle as a disorienting red strobe flashing effect begins. It cuts to scenes of each individual member of the band against trees and flashing lightning as their names are "sung" intercut with them playing their instruments followed by the "Metalocalypse" logo. Another promo has a government official introducing the band members one by one to his colleagues in the style of a formal briefing, speaking their names as they are in the theme song in a professional manner, as their images are projected on a screen behind him.

With only a few days until the premiere of the first episode, two additional promos began appearing after midnight on August 1st on Adult Swim. One features the band performing their song "Duncan Hills Coffee Jingle" at a concert with gigantic pots of coffee and creamer pouring down and melting audience members' faces. The other features images generally regarded as "peaceful" and "cute", such as photos of a horsey and a puppy and a couple walking on the beach during sunset being blown up by explosions or, in the case of the photo of the baby becoming "metalized" with the words "Everything will be METAL" intercut with each scene.

Trivia

The series was originally pitched as Deathclock, but that name could not be used due to an existing trademark, so the show and the main characters were then renamed Dethklok. The show's title was then extended to Death Clock Metalocalypse, although the starring band still retained the name Dethklok. However, the crew has now shortened the title to simply Metalocalypse, because the extended show title was too complicated.

In the first episode, the band is seen in a grocery store named after the Finnish metal band Finntroll.

Arch Enemy guitarist Michael Amott has recorded some voices for the show, though he's not sure when and where they will be used. James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett from Metallica have also recorded voices, and members of Nevermore have been rumored to have voices on the show.

The Metalocalypse premiere was the #1 rated show in its timeslot among males aged 18-34, and earned the network's best premiere delivery and ratings to date in 2006. Among the top ad-supported basic cable programs of the week, METALOCALYPSE ranked #12 among men 18-34 and #6 among men 18-24. The series premiere ranked #30 for the week among adults 18-34. [2]

When they are in the supermarket, Nathan Explosion makes references to Cannibal Corpse songs, such as "Every Bone Broken" and "Hammer Smashed Face".
