The “Women's Provincial Championship” also known as WPC, is a major sporting event of the highest level of New Zealand Domestic Professional [rugby union] women's competition. This contest is held annually from late August to early November and managed by the [New Zealand Rugby Union] (NZRU).[1] The competition was first introduced in 1999, with an initial total of 14 teams competing. The number of teams increased to 18 in the year 2000, but was later decreased to a total of six teams. Currently, the competition features nine teams.[2] The Auckland Storm are the current holders of the JJ Stewart Trophy, the women’s equivalent of the Ranfurly Shield.[3]


Competition Format

All teams are required to face each other once, with the top four teams in the championship proceeding to the the semi-finals. However during the period spanning 2011 to 2014, instead of having the top four teams compete for a spot in the final, the top two teams in the championship automatically qualified for it, eliminating the semi-finals entirely. Semi-finals as part of the competition was re-introduced In 2015.
