WAAL ("The Whale") is a classic rock radio station broadcasting at 99.1 MHz and licensed to Binghamton, NY and is under ownership of Townsquare Media. WAAL is the oldest FM radio station in the Southern Tier. During weekday mornings and weekday afternoons, traffic reports are announced after every classic rock ride.
History
In the early 1970s, it was playing a progressive rock format. In the mid 1970s WAAL was known as WAAL Stereo FM 99. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, it was known as The Hot FM, which played Top 40. WAAL was acquired by Citadel Broadcasting in 1998 from Wicks Broadcast Group.[1] Citadel merged with Cumulus Media on September 16, 2011.[2]

- The New Whale Morning Show - Jim Free and the Free Zone is on the air from 5am-10am on weekdays. They have many contests, music news, fun, crazy stuff, traffic, and weather.
- 6 Pack Classic Rock Ride - Each hour featuring at least 6 great Classic Rock songs in a row,after the Whale Morning Show.
- The Whale Diner - An hour of requests and dedications hosted by Kyle.
- Get the Led Out - For 22 years, the Whale has been playing a triple shot of Led Zeppelin every weeknight at 9:15pm. Originally at 9pm, at its height of popularity in the late 90's was a full 4 song block with Trivia and prizes hosted by The Wildman.
- The Rockin' 80's - Saturdays at 11pm, hosted by Zander. The Rockin' 80's is a weekly 80's rock show.
- Little Steven's Underground Garage - Little Steven from The Sporanos and the E Street Band - Sundays at 10pm.
- The Southern Tier Closeup - Sundays at 6am, hosted by Kathy Whyte, a radio program showcasing community issues.
- Time Warp - Sundays at 8am, a 4-hour classic rock radio show hosted by Bill St. James.
- Six Pack Classic Rock Rides - At least six songs played without interruption all day and night, every day of the week after the morning show.
- The Beatle Years - Bob Malik your host for a show about the band that defined a generation - Sunday at 7am
