James Brandt Curran (born 19 August 1986) is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. James is more commonly known by his stage name 'James The Mormon'. Although he doesn't make religious music, he believes in being open and true to who you are hence the moniker James The Mormon. "Mormon" is a nickname for a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.[1]

History

James grew up the son of a diplomat overseas in countries like Russia, China, Taiwan and Uzbekistan. In between assignments, James would spend a year or two in either Virginia or Maryland before returning overseas. James studied at BYUI (Brigham Young University-Idaho) and graduated in 2010. He served as a missionary for the LDS church in Rostov Na Donu, Russia for six months and then finished his Russian speaking mission in Everett, Washington. After two years of missionary service, he returned to Utah where he would soon take off his career as a rapper.

Music career

James started his journey by posting videos on his YouTube channel in 2014 which attracted much attention from the Mormon community. He would soon release 'I'm Not a Rapper' which would soon after hit number 1 on the iTunes Hip-Hop/ rap chart.[2] 'I'm Not a Rapper' also went on to reach #1 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart.[3]
