Michael Falkesgaard (born 9 April 1991) is a Filipino footballer who currently plays as a goalkeeper for Bangkok United in the Thai League 1 and the Philippines national team. He has also played for the youth national teams of Denmark. Falkesgaard was born in Denmark and was eligible to represent both Denmark and the Philippines.

Early life

Falkesgaard was born in Denmark to a Danish father and a Filipino mother. He was influenced by his father and elder brother to take up football. When he was 5 years old, he asked his father to take him to a local youth club, Kastrup Boldklub. Falkesgaard has said that, like other Danish children, he decided to become a goalkeeper to follow in the footsteps of professional footballer Peter Schmeichel.[1]

Club career

Denmark

Falkesgaard started his senior club career with Brøndby IF in 2010. In 2015, he moved to Odense Boldklub where he was the first choice goalkeeper. However, after few matches into the season, he suffered a serious ACL injury that needed operation. He returned from injury and was signed up by rival club, FC Midtjylland.[1]

Thailand

In January 2018, he moved to Southeast Asia from Denmark to play for Thai club Bangkok United F.C. of the Thai League after he was sold by Midtjylland. He did not played a single match for Midtjylland.[2] He was brought in by Bangkok to fill their ASEAN player quota and Fakesgaard had to process his Philippine passport to satisfy documentary requirements.[1]

International career

Denmark Youth

Falkesgaard has represented Denmark at under-18 to under-20 levels.

Philippines

He is also of Filipino descent, thus being eligible to make the switch to the Philippines. The Philippine Football Federation learned of his eligibility through Dennis Cagara and Jerry Lucena, both of whom are also Danish-Filipino and are capped for the Philippines.[3]

On March 2018, Falkesgaard received his first call up for the Philippines.[4] Falkesgaard was included in the squad for the friendly against Fiji on March 22[5] and played for the first half of the match that ended in a 3-2 win for the Philippines. No goal was conceded by the Philippines during the minutes Falkesgaard played. Nick O'Donnell was subbed in for him at the start of the second half.[6]
