Latvian Orthodox religion dominant in Latvia with numerous denominations in other parts of the world. The religion centers around the biblical flood and its ramifications on human society. The traditional garments include a black and red color scheme, in particular a large ceremonial hat for a community's holy man known as 'Father'. Commonly, a portion of its adherents are converts from other religions, known within their communities as 'Novice'.
The religion garnered some negative publicity back in the '80s. In 1985, several members of the Latvian Orthodox religion were shown in the news practicing creulty to animals, namely squirrel mutilations. However, this was an extreme sect and its practices are not representative of the religion at all.
