Atal Bhujal Yojana (or, Atal Jal) is a groundwater management scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the 95th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, on 25 December 2019. The national plan has an allocated budget of INR 6000 crore.Within that 50% shall be in the form of a World Bank loan, and be repaid by the Central Government. The remaining 50% shall be through Central Assistance from regular budgetary support. The entire World Bank's loan component and Central Assistance shall be passed on to the States as Grants.
History
Atal Bhujal Yojana is a government of India and the World Bank, backed scheme to improve groundwater management in seven states of India. In June 2018, the World Bank Board approved the scheme and it will be funded by the World Bank.[1]
Beneficiary State
Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh are the designated priority states for improvement of groundwater management through community participation, impacting around 78 districts and 8350 gram panchayats. The duration of the scheme is from 2020 to 2025.[2][3][4][5]
