Janata curfew (transl. People's curfew) was an effort to combat coronavirus spread, introduced by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, in the wake of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic in India.[1] On 19 March, 2020, the Prime Minister implored all citizens of India to observe a self-imposed 'curfew' from 7 am to 9 pm IST on Sunday, 22 March 2020 to help reduce community spreading of coronavirus disease in India.[2] On 24 March, the prime minister announced that India go under 'total lock-down' for the next 21 days.[3]

Action plan

The Janata curfew was a 14 hour curfew (7am-9pm) that was scheduled for 22 March 2020.[4] Everyone except people of 'essential services' such as police, medical services, media, home delivery professionals and firefighters were needed to take part in the curfew. At 5 pm (22nd March 2020), all citizens were asked to stand in their doorways, balconies or windows, and clap their hands or ring their bells in appreciation for the professionals delivering these essential services.[2] People belonging to National Cadet Corps and National Service Scheme were to enforce the curfew in the country.[5] The Prime Minister also urged the youth to inform 10 others about Janata curfew and encourage everyone to observe the curfew.[5]

Support by other organizations or unions

Some auto and taxi unions in Delhi have stated that they will not be providing service during the Janata curfew.[6]

Precautions and actions taken by states during curfew

Some states have taken further precautions like the shutdown of Metro Trains, Suburban trains, Buses, Trams and Monorail services.[7][8] Tamil Nadu will not allow visitors in jails during the Janata curfew, nor fishing is allowed.[9][7] Only employees that work for essential services are allowed to board local trains in Mumbai, and the rail service has been cut back by a lot causing cancellation of more then 3,700 trains, these actions will start when the curfew takes effect however will end on March 31st.[10][11][7]

In the case of Telangana, while supporting the Prime Minister's Janata curfew call, the Chief Minister of Telangana, K. Chandrashekar Rao appealed to the people of Telangana to stay indoors for 24hrs from 6 am on Sunday (22-03-2020) in order to contain the possible spread of coronavirus.[12]

Misinformation that the government is spreading "anti-corona" drug in the country during Janata curfew went viral on social media.[13] Film actor Mohanlal and many others shared the fake news that, the vibration generated by clapping together during Janata curfew will kill the virus.[14] One viral message says that the lifetime of coronavirus is only 12 hours and staying home for 14 hours during Janata curfew break the chain of transmission.[15] Another message claimed that observing Janata curfew will result in the reduction of coronavirus cases by 40%.[15] Tweet by Rajinikanth claiming that a 14-hour stay home can stop the coronavirus disease going from "stage 2" to "stage 3" was classified as misinformation and was taken down by Twitter for violating community guidelines.[16] Amitabh Bachchan was heavily criticised for one of his tweets, which claimed vibrations from clapping, blowing conch shells as part of Sunday’s Janata Curfew would have reduced or destroyed coronavirus potency as it was ‘amavasya’, the darkest day of the month.[17]
