Kirkland College
Appearance
Kirkland College was an independent liberal arts college located in Clinton, New York from 1968 to 1978, with a *strong* emphasis on *liberal*.
Prior to 1978, Hamilton College was all male; from 1968 to 1978 Kirkland College was its all-female counterpart, located adjacent to the Hamilton College campus, until the two colleges merged in 1978.
Historical Notes
- Kirkland students were commonly known as "Kirkies", a derisive nickname that essentually connotated female hippy or Earth Mother. In the late 70's, few Kirkland students actually fit this image, but they were a very visible minority, so the term endured. The archetypical Kirkie:
- never combed her hair, much less shaved any,
- was a rabid vegetarian,
- regularly wore hiking or work boots with an indian print skirt, and
- graduated with a self-designed major in something like "Economic and societal oppression of the female psychie during the post-Industrial Revolution".
