Enhypen (Korean: 엔하이픈; RR: Enhaipeun; Template:Lang-ja; Enhaipun), commonly stylized as ENHYPEN, is a South Korean boy band formed by Belift Lab (or simply Belift), a joint venture between CJ ENM and Hybe Corporation.[3] Formed through the 2020 survival competition show I-Land, the group is composed of seven members: Jungwon, Heeseung, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo, and Ni-ki. Enhypen debuted on November 30, 2020, with the extended play (EP) Border: Day One.
Name
The group's name, Enhypen, was introduced through the live-broadcast of the final episode of I-Land. According to etymology, Enhypen derives its name from the symbol Hyphen (-), that creates new meanings including "Connection, Discovery, & Growth".[4] Similar to how a hyphen connects different words to discover new meanings, Enhypen aims "to come together to connect, discover and grow together to create a new act".[2][5][6]
Career
Pre-debut: I-Land
In March 2019, Belift was co-founded by South Korean entertainment agencies CJ E&M and Hybe Corporation, with plans of creating a new band in 2020.[7] Auditions commenced the same month in Seoul, the United States, Taiwan, and Japan, among others, for male trainees born between 1997 and 2008.[8][9][10] On May 8, 2020, television channel Mnet announced the survival competition series, I-Land, a joint venture of both companies that "follows the process of next generation K-pop artists being born".[10][11][12] Enhypen was formed through I-Land, featuring 23 male trainees, some of whom were from Belift's auditions, while others transferred from Big Hit Music, formerly Big Hit Entertainment, all then had been training under Belift. The show was aired weekly on Mnet from June 26 to September 18, 2020, and distributed internationally through Hybe Labels' YouTube channel.[13][14][15] The show was split into two parts. 12 contestants from the first part made it to the second part of the series.[13] On the final episode of the show, seven members were selected out of the nine final contestants, with six being chosen by global ranking and the last member by the producer's choice.[16][17] The debut line-up of the group with seven members, Heeseung, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo, Jungwon, and Ni-ki, was announced via live television broadcast of the finale.[18][19]
2020–present: Debut with Border: Day One, second extended play, and first studio album
On October 22, 2020, a trailer titled "Choose-Chosen" was posted to Enhypen's YouTube channel, announcing the group's debut in November 2020.[18][20][21] A second trailer titled "Dusk-Dawn" was released three days later, followed by a pair of concept mood boards on October 27.[22][23] On October 28, Belift announced that Enhypen will release their debut extended play, Border: Day One on November 30.[1][24][25] Ahead of their debut, the group accumulated over one million followers on social media platforms, simultaneously across TikTok, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and V Live.[26] On November 4, the group amassed over 150,000 pre-orders within two days and by November 21, pre-orders had surpassed 300,000 copies.[27][28] The EP Border: Day One and the lead single "Given-Taken" were released on November 30, 2020, with a live showcase promotion.[29][30] On December 4, 2020, Enhypen officially made their debut on KBS' Music Bank, where the band performed "Given-Taken".[31]
Border: Day One landed at #39 on Oricon 2020 Yearly Album Chart,[32] and at #2 on South Korea's Gaon Album Chart, having sold 318,528 copies in one day and becoming the highest-selling album by a K-pop group that debuted in 2020.[33][34] The album peaked #1 on Hanteo Charts — holding the record for the best selling album by a rookie group in 2021. Within two weeks of debut, the band won Next Leader Award at the 2020 The Fact Music Awards.[35]
In February 2021, Border: Day One received a platinum certification from the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA), giving the group their first certification in the country.[36] On March 25, 2021, Belift announced that Enhypen would make their comeback at the end of April.[37] A trailer titled "Intro: The Invitation" was released on April 5, announcing their second extended play Border: Carnival.[38] The EP was released in conjunction with its lead single "Drunk-Dazed".[39] On April 8, it was announced that the album pre-orders had surpassed 370,000 copies in three days.[40] Prior to its release day, album pre-orders had surpassed 450,000 copies.[41] On April 27, Hanteo Chart released the Daily Physical Album rankings where Enhypen came in first place with 319,073 total sales of their new album, setting a new personal record of highest first-day album sales.[42]
On May 4, the group received their first ever music show win on SBS MTV's The Show with "Drunk-Dazed".[43] This was soon followed by wins on Show Champion and Music Bank.[44][45] Their second extended play, Border: Carnival, debuted at number 1 on the Oricon Albums Chart, becoming the group's first chart-topper in Japan, with over 83,000 copies sold.[46] On May 25, Border: Carnival debuted at #18 on the Billboard 200 Chart.[47] It also debuted on #3 spot on World Digital Song Sales for "Drunk-Dazed", #9 on World Albums, #4 on Top Album Sales, #4 on Top Current Album Sales, and #6 on Tastemaker Albums. In addition, Enhypen makes their first appearance at #18 on the Billboard Artist 100 Chart.[48]
On July 6, 2021, Enhypen made their Japanese debut with the single Border: Hakanai (BORDER : 儚い), which includes "Forget Me Not", that serves as the opening theme for the anime Re-Main,[49] and the Japanese versions of "Given-Taken" and "Let Me In (20 Cube)".[50] On July 29, 2021, Enhypen collaborated with the computer-animated television series Tayo the Little Bus by remaking the theme song "Hey Tayo"[51] and releasing a new song entitled "Billy Poco".[52]
On August 25, 2021, Belift confirmed that Enhypen would make their comeback at the end of September.[53] On September 2, Belift announced that members Heeseung, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, and Jungwon were tested positive for COVID-19.[54] On September 5, member Ni-ki also tested positive.[55] On September 16, 2021, Belift announced they had recovered and that their first full length album, Dimension: Dilemma, was set to be released on October 12,[56] with a trailer titled "Intro: Whiteout" being released on September 17.[57] On September 23, it was announced that the album pre-orders had surpassed 600,000 copies in six days.[58] By October 7, pre-orders had surpassed 910,000 copies.[59] Following the release on October 12, the album sold 501,748 copies on the first day on the Hanteo charts,[60] and also landed #1 in the Oricon Album Chart in Japan and Gaon Album Chart in Korea.[61][62]
On October 19, the group received their 4th music show win on SBS MTV's The Show with "Tamed-Dashed".[63] This was soon followed by wins on Show Champion and Music Bank.[64] On October 25, Dimension: Dilemma debuted at #11 on Billboard 200 Chart surpassing their record during Border: Carnival era with a peak of #18.[65] In addition, Enhypen also entered Billboard Artist 100 Chart at #12.[66] As of November 2021, the first studio album has surpassed over 1.1 million copies sold on Gaon,[67] making it their first-ever million-seller album and was certified by KMCA on December. [68]
On December 9, 2021, Belift confirmed that Enhypen will make their comeback on January 10, 2022 with their first repackaged album, Dimension: Answer.[69][70][71]
