re phab:T298352

(It is here.)

Hi GoingBatty. So, I don't think I like this bot, or whatever it is (if it's not a bot, what is it? If it's just a semi-automated human assistance tool, it comes under WP:MEATBOT pr WP:ASSISTED or something like that it seems, which it looks like is treated much like a bot, if I'm reading things right?)

So, anyway, if T298352 is a bot, there's a whole process to get these deployed it looks like. I'm not familiar with it, but I see that there's a page Wikipedia:Bots which includes links other pages such as Wikipedia:Bot policy and so on, and there's a good deal to digest here. I'm not up to speed on any of this, but WP:BOTISSUE says to contact the "bot operator" first, which I guess you're not (its User:BrownHairedGirl and maybe others?), but you wrote it so maybe you'd be a good starting point? If not, let me know, thanks.

So... I'm willing to be convinced that it's a good thing, but that might be for a larger discussion (not sure). I made my points at User talk:BrownHairedGirl, if you want to see them. On that basis, I'm requesting here that you disable the thing until we can figure out the next steps, here. If you don't want to, OK, then the question is how can we work together to make sure everything is done correctly and smoothly here. One thing I'd like to know first off is, what is a quick overview of the process that leads from conception to deployment of these bots (or whatever they are), and this one in particular? If I'm reading it right, there would have been some discussion about it, I think? Could you point me to it? Thanks for your time. Herostratus (talk) 12:05, 29 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Herostratus: I think that you have inadvertently conflated two separate processes.
First, there is an AWB run which I have just completed. That job regularised the positioning of a bunch of inline templates: {{Better source needed}}, {{Self-published inline}}, {{Unreliable fringe source}}, {{Irrelevant citation}}, {{Obsolete source}}, {{COI source}}, {{Promotional source}}, {{Unreliable source?}}, {{Failed verification}}, {{Primary source inline}}, {{Unreliable medical source}}. In each case, the doc for the template says to place it after the <ref>..</ref> tags, but some uses erroneously placed it inside the <ref>..</ref> tags.
I found these uses by a scan of the latest (20211220) database dump, and have fixed them all. I plan to do the same again with the next database dump. This is not a bot, just an AWB JOB.
Having seen my work, GoingBatty then opened phab:T298352, which proposes to incorporate these fixes in AWB's WP:GENFIXES. That means that whenever anyone runs AWB for any purposes, it will make these fixes, unless they disable GENFIXES. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 12:45, 29 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Herostratus: Current consensus, as demonstrated in the template documentation, is to place these inline templates after the <ref>...</ref> tags. However, some people (and some tools) incorrectly place them inside the <ref>...</ref> tags. BrownHairedGirl's work inspired me to ask the developers of AutoWikiBrowser (software used by human editors and automated bots) to make this part of its general fixes. However, consensus can change. If it does, I will be happy to adjust or cancel my AWB feature request accordingly. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 16:34, 29 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, User:BrownHairedGirl and GoingBatty. I still don't agree that this is for the best, but it's not worth fighting about. I was considering rolling back the changes per WP:BRD and making you prove the benefit. I probably wouldn't have won my point, but maybe, since you'd need a supermajority. But it's not worth taking people's time.
I looked into it some, and boy the history of these templates is a bit of mess, with various duplicated templates and name changes and all and different purposes and all ("[self=published source]" and so forth). There still is a nearly-duplicate (but not exactly) template, {{Unreliable source?}} which isn't used much that I've seen.
As near as I can tell, there wasn't any discussion over whether the template should be inline or in the "Refs" section, somebody just did it. It's established precedent because nobody much thought about over the years I suppose. If the documentation writer had said the other thing, that probably just would have become accepted as the established precedent. But oh well. (I asked a couple-few years ago for the documentation to be changed to "inline or in the Refs section as the editor thinks best" (a general approach I wish was more popular), but was rebuffed in a thread that had I think one other participant. Template talk pages are obscure.)
I think the best way forward is to have a different template for editors to use when they feel that the template should be inside the ref, and I'll see if I can get that approved, but that has nothing to do with us here. Thank you for your service in doing what you believe is the correct thing, and which indeed may be (can't be proven either way I guess). Herostratus (talk) 19:17, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Watchlist woes

You replied to my question at Teahouse/Questions, and I thought I replied back to you there. However, when the page was archived, it looks like it wasn't changed. So here's my question and your response again (my computer doesn't like to copy/paste):

"I'm confused about my Watchlist: in mid-December four of my edits (three minor) were highlighted on my Watchlist (and on my Contributions page also). Nothing happened to the edits at that time, and I think the highlights were automated. However, on Dec 23 somebody tinkered with my edit (which is fine) but nothing appeared about it on my Watchlist at that time, although that page is definitely listed to be watched. I wonder how many other changes to my watched pages have been made that I've missed. Does this have anything to do with the Watchlist filters?"

You replied: "Maybe. It might help if you mention the pages in question and the filters you have enabled."

The edits highlighted on my Watchlist page are: Dec 18 Captive City (5:50)

       Captive City (6:08)
       Private Hell 36 (7:52)

Dec 15 711 Ocean Drive (7:25)

The edit that didn't show up: Dec 27 711 Ocean Drive (14:10) user Gcjnst

The Watchlist filters enabled are:

 Likely have problems
 Very likely have problems
 page edits
 page creations
 category creations
 logged actions

Pete Best Beatles (talk) 22:26, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Pete Best Beatles: After looking at mw:Help:New filters for edit review/Quality and Intent Filters, my guess is the edit to 711 Ocean Drive did not appear because you chose to filter your watchlist to only see edits that "Likely have problems" or "Very likely have problems". If you remove those filters, does the edit appear on your watchlist? Hope this helps! GoingBatty (talk) 22:51, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You're wrong. Please don't do this.Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 08:28, 1 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I deeply apologize. But please mention in the edit summary that Condé Nast is a global mass media company and WP:Citoid was being stupid. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 08:37, 1 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Alexis Jazz: Looking at your edit that introduced the wrong author, I can't tell whether it was Citoid or something else, so I won't be mentioning Citoid in my edit summaries. If you're able to replicate the issue, I hope you will please report it in the appropriate place. Thanks, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 17:16, 1 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That edit is actually tagged "Visual edit". There is only one reason I'd ever fire up that monstrosity: citoid. Thank you for the improved edit summary! — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 17:45, 1 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Phabricator: Citoid incorrectly inserts "Condé Nast" as author in references. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 18:09, 1 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Alexis Jazz: Hope you like this edit summary better, which my bot will use today. GoingBatty (talk) 17:23, 1 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Alexis Jazz: Also, Condé Nast (businessman) founded Condé Nast the company. It's possible there are articles by him in old issues of Vanity Fair, Vogue, The New Yorker, and other magazines before he died in 1942, so my bot can't blindly delete every instance. Suzana Joumaa

Greeting, User:GoingBatty hope you are well, I am Wikipedian from Saudi Arabia, Can you help me review this article and correct it, and if it is appropriate, move it to the main space. Thank you --Wikipeida From Saudi Arabia (talk) 13:58, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Wikipeida From Saudi Arabia: Hi there! You've seen that I've made updates to Draft:Suzana Joumaa. I hope you will add information about her career as an artist, singer/songwriter, and interior architect. When you're ready to submit it for review, add {{subst:submit}} to the top of your draft. I also suggest you change your username from the misspelled "Wikipeida" to "Wikipedian". Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 14:37, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi thank you , @GoingBatty: if you have time can you move it to the article and thanks a lot beacuse I think you have enough experience to distinguish the article based on the authority you have Best--Wikipeida From Saudi Arabia (talk) 14:50, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Wikipeida From Saudi Arabia: You have a lot of work to do before the draft is ready to become an article. Since I do not read Arabic, I will not be reviewing the article. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 15:24, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes,@GoingBatty: I have added to you the English sources in The Article, which are world-renowned websites and newspapers in Qatar ,also I have added some information and sources. Can you review please? Wikipeida From Saudi Arabia (talk) 03:55, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Wikipeida From Saudi Arabia: Your second sentence has NINE references, while many facts do not have any. Remember that references should be added either directly following the fact that they support, or at the end of the sentence that they support, following any punctuation. Keep working on it! GoingBatty (talk) 04:07, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes,@GoingBatty: and I think the article went well with the sources What do you think? Thank you for your advice --Wikipeida From Saudi Arabia (talk) 04:59, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Wikipeida From Saudi Arabia: Updated again. I suggest you focus on independent sources, not her own web site or interviews. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 05:08, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes,@GoingBatty: As for independent sources, we have many, including Qatari newspapers, and her website is only cited once, --Wikipeida From Saudi Arabia (talk) 05:16, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Wikipeida From Saudi Arabia: You used her web site as a reference for four items. I combined the references so it's only included in the reference list once with an "a b c d". GoingBatty (talk) 05:26, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@GoingBatty: The article has been updated again with the correct sources and I learn a lot from you! Thank you so much for your wonderful edits --Wikipeida From Saudi Arabia (talk) 05:55, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Wikipeida From Saudi Arabia: I don't think you understand that references should be added directly following the fact that they support. There are MANY cases where I read a sentence, then read the reference immediately after that sentence, and they are not related at all. GoingBatty (talk) 06:05, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
GoingBatty I have deleted the sentences that are not mentioned in the sources and Is the draft ready for the article in the main space now I've added the image too , i hope you move it , stay safe Happy Editing Wikipeida From Saudi Arabia (talk)
@Wikipeida From Saudi Arabia: You still have some "failed verification" and "citation needed" tags to resolve. If references #4 and #6 are to the same article, then you can combine them. File:Suzanajoumaa.jpg is missing evidence of permission, so see the instructions on that page. As I stated above, I will not be reviewing the article since I do not read Arabic. When you're ready to have your draft reviewed, click the blue "Finished drafting? Submit for review!" button on your draft. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 14:50, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I just want to ask you a question about the Wikipedia page : Morgan Giraudet. How I can make a link between his Wikidata and his Wikipedia? The subtitle is not present.

Thank you very much.

Billie, aka BillieHereDitary (talk) 21:54, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@BillieHereDitary: When looking at the Morgan Giraudet article, you can look at the left side toolbar for a link labeled "Wikidata item" that will take you to the Wikidata item about him. I changed the {{short description}} on the Wikipedia article and the description on the Wikidata item. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 21:58, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How to disclose conflict of interest

Hi user:GoingBatty, much appreciated you help as usual, but I don't have any conflict of interest over this article, I am not paid editor too, I am salaried staff of University of Nizwa to provide this type of help and support, should I forward the letter signed by me that is stating I don't have any confliction of interest over this article, as word or pdf format. Please help me how to write this. thanks in advance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ahmed Al Harrasi (talkcontribs) 15:50, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Ahmed Al Harrasi: If you are Ahmed Al Harrasi writing about Ahmed Al Harrasi, then you have a conflict of interest. If you are NOT Ahmed Al Harrasi, then impersonating Ahmed Al Harrasi is a violation of our user policy. Salaried staff of University of Nizwa writing an article about a professor of the University of Nizwa is considered paid editing and must be disclosed on your user page - see WP:PAYDISCLOSE. Either way, go to your user page and write a couple sentences on your relationship with Ahmed Al Harrasi and the University of Nizwa. Thanks! (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~. Or, you can use the [ reply ] button, which automatically signs posts.) hi user: GoingBatty. thanks for your reply, I wrote "I, Syed Mohammad Sarfaraz Hamid, https://www.unizwa.edu.om/profile_details.php?lang=en&comingfrom=&staffid=1578 work with the Natural and Medical Sciences Research Center (NMSRC) at the University of Nizwa as a Design Analyst and Developer. I disclosed that I am paid to work for the Article/Biography of Prof Ahmed Al-Harrasi, Vice Chancellor for Graduate Studies, Research & External Relations, Chairman - NMSRC. Further, I am declaring that there is no conflict of anything between me, the employer and the client over Wikipedia article/biography creation. The University of Nizwa is my sponsor and the employer in the Sultanate of Oman." Should I write something else ? if it is fine should I add this text before the starting of the article ? thanks in advance for your cooperation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ahmed Al Harrasi (talkcontribs) 17:13, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Ahmed Al Harrasi: Please do not add a new section for each reply - just click "Edit source" and add your reply and your signature - see Help:Introduction to talk pages.
Your proposal above is good, except the sentence starting with "Further..." - please read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. This should be added to your user page: User:Ahmed Al Harrasi. GoingBatty (talk) 17:53, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi user: GoingBatty, thanks again for your reply if the given is fine i will add it to the article: I, Syed Mohammad Sarfaraz Hamid, https://www.unizwa.edu.om/profile_details.php?lang=en&comingfrom=&staffid=1578 work with the Natural and Medical Sciences Research Center (NMSRC) at the University of Nizwa as a Design Analyst and Developer. @Ahmed Al Harrasi: I changed the employer & client fields for you. The |U1-otherlinks= can be changed after you add your disclosure to your userpage. You should change your username first (see Wikipedia:Changing username), and then you can change your username in {{Connected contributor (paid)}} on Draft talk:Ahmed Al-Harrasi. Hello, I've been trying to decline this item which does not pass WP:NMUSIC and which has twice been moved to main by a new account. But... keep gettng 'page unresponsve' messages after clicking on 'review' and then on decline. At that point nothing happens and the page wll not reload either. I've done a reboot etc. to no avail; everything else seems to be working OK – I can edit and review other pages it seems, but not this one. Any ideas? Orrr... if you feel it appropriate could you decline? No worries if not – I'm sure someone will do so hopefully before it gets moved again. Cheers.
