Mixed drinks come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and they may be either alcoholic or non-alcoholic.

A mixed drink is a beverage in which two or more ingredients are mixed, with or without psychoactive substance(s).

Types

Non-psychoactive

A non-alcoholic mixed drink (also known as virgin cocktail, boneless cocktail, temperance drink, or mocktail) is a cocktail-style beverage made without alcoholic ingredients.

Some of these mixed drinks are listed in the list of polysubstance combinations.

  • Kava: Kava is not traditionally flavored. However, it can be flavored like any alcoholic drink.

Alcoholic

A "spirit and mixer" is any combination of one alcoholic spirit with one non-alcoholic component, such as gin and tonic, whereas a cocktail generally comprises three or more liquid ingredients, at least one of which is alcoholic.

History

Cola

The original cola drink by Pemberton contained cocaine from coca leaves as well.[1][2] His non-alcoholic recipe was inspired by the coca wine of pharmacist Angelo Mariani, created in 1863.[2][3]
