Kajjan Begum was a Pakistani classical singer and playback singer.[1]

Early life

Kajjan was born on 24 January at 1932 in Lucknow during British India.[2] She was elder among her siblings and her mother Hussaini Begum was a singer and her two younger sisters Ishrat Jehan and Shamim Bano were also classical singers.[3] She was trained in classical singing at Lucknow School with her sisters.[4]

Then she started singing at Marsiya-khawani with her mother.[5] She would sing songs at Palace Mohammad Amir Ahmed Khan and recite elegies during religious days but later when days were over Kajjan Begum would sing thumris, kajris and dadras and light classical Hindustani music.[1]

Career

After Partition of Indian they stayed at India for some time and she became a popular singer and later she along with her family migrated to Pakistan.[1][6] Later she joined Radio Pakistan Karachi and started singing on radio.[5] She trained her daughter Mehnaz Begum in classical music.[7]

In 1962 Fazal Ahmad Karim Fazli offered her to sing a song in the film Chiragh Jalta Raha and she agreed the film was a Sliver Jubilee hit at the box office it was premiered by Fatima Jinnah, who was the chief guest in the opening ceremony held at Nishat cinema, Karachi.[8]

In 2000 she was honored by the Government of Pakistan with the Pride of Performance for her contributions to the Music Industry.[2]

Perosnal life

Kajjan begum married singer Akhtar Wasi Ali in 1952 and with him she had five children including Mehnaz Begum a popular singer.[1]

Death

Kajjan Begum died on 10 February 2000 at Karachi, Pakistan.[9]
