Japan Airlines Flight 516 was a scheduled Japan Airlines passenger flight from Sapporo to Haneda Airport in Tokyo. On 2 January 2024, the Airbus A350 operating the flight collided with a Japan Coast Guard aircraft and caught fire during landing.[2]
Images show fire coming out from the center of the aircraft with the plane tilted forward. Another footage shows the aircraft completely engulfed in flames with the wings remaining intact.[3][4] All 367 passengers and 12 crew members[5] were evacuated according to the airline.[6] According to the Japan Coast Guard, there were reportedly six occupants in the Coast Guard aircraft; one managed to escape while the others are currently missing.[7] The crash marks the first ever serious incident involving an Airbus A350, and is the first and only hull loss of the type.
