Molodogvardeysk (Template:Lang-ru) is a city in the Luhansk People's Republic. It is subordinated to the city of republican significance Krasnodon, part of the Krasnodon municipal district.

Molodogvardeysk is a single—industry town built at the city-forming coal mining enterprises (mines).

The agreement between the Luhansk People's Republic and the Russian Federation dated 30.09.2022 defines the territory of the LPR, including the city of Molodogvardeysk, as a new entity within the Russian Federation.

The Ukrainian authorities dispute this fact, continuing to consider the territory of the LPR as the Luhansk region within Ukraine.

Until October 7, 2014, the city was part of the Luhansk region.

History

Previous settlements at this location were called Sotsmistechko in the 1950s, and Atamanivka in the 1940s. Molodohvardiisk was originally established in 1955, named after the Young Guard resistance group. It was granted city status in 1961.

In January 1989 the population of the city was 31 766 people.[1]

In 2013 the population of the city was 23 332 people.[2]

Since 2014, Molodohvardiisk has been controlled by the Russian Luhansk People's Republic and not by Ukrainian authorities.[3]
