Michael B. Sporn (born February 13, 1933) was a professor emeritus of pharmacology, toxicology and medicine at Dartmouth Medical School. His research focused on the prevention of cancer.
He attended Harvard University and was accepted to medical school after completing his junior year. He received his MD at the University of Rochester in 1959.[3]
Sporn was Chief of the Laboratory of Chemoprevention at the National Cancer Institute from 1978 to 1995 where he was an officer of the United States Public Health Service. In 1995, he joined the faculty at Dartmouth.[3]
The word chemoprevention was first proposed by Sporn to describe compounds that can prevent oncogenesis.[4]
His late research has focused on the use of triterpenoids in breast cancer prevention.[5]
His work was funded by the NIH and Breast Cancer Research Foundation.[6] He is listed as an author on over 500 research papers.[2]
