Javier Williams is a Mexican TV and film producer, designer and writer that has been active in broadcast television, streaming projects for over 30 years, and more recently, film projects, currently working as SVP of Spanish-language content in the production company 3Pas Studios, and the CEO of Mexican production company, Visceral.

Early life and education

Javier Williams was born March 3, 1970 in Mexico City, growing up in the city until he spent some time traveling abroad, mainly in London. He graduated high school from Modern American School, having studied his whole life there, and then completed a BA in the Universidad Iberoamericana with a degree in Industrial Design, specializing in Interior Design. He would later explore following his interest in history and continued his education through different programs in UK universities, completing a BA in Classical Studies through the University of London's distance learning programs, a Masters in Sciences in Museum Studies and then a PhD in Archaeology and Ancient History in the University of Leicester.

Career

In 1992, while studying his third year in college during his first degree, he started working at Televisa as a designer and art director, working in different projects creating sets, graphics and the general look of tv shows, newscasts and channels such as Ritmo Son and Bandamax where, during that time, he was responsible for designing all sets and visual style for the channel.

In 1995 he started producing the Mexican version of Club Disney in coproduction with Disney, with the show having three seasons at Televisa before Disney moved all of its properties to Televisa's competitor. During this time, while producing, writing and directing this show, he was also invited to write a TV special for Buenavista International to celebrate the opening of Disney's Animal Kingdom, hosted by Daisy Fuentes. Also, for its third season, he co-developed an original version of the show called El Zep de Disney with Jorge Poza and Natalia Garduño. These experiences made him one of the network's main kid's programming producers, and he went on to develop several shows like crating El Cubo de Donalú with Graciela Mauri and eventually taking the reigns of Sesame Workshop's Latin American version of Sesame Street, Plaza Sésamo, overseeing that project for 9 years until Sesame Workshop's strategy changed.

At the same time, he kept on working as an art director in other shows and projects, including Televisa's foray into financial programming when they created the channel Conexión Financiera.[1], where Williams created all sets and oversaw all graphics on a 24-hr channel.

In the 2000s he was producing all types of programming within Televisa, including series such as Sexo y Otros Secretos , S.O.S., with Benjamin Cann directing and also producing, and the Mexican version of the successful Argentinian show Hermanos y Detectives with Julio Bracho and Adrián Uribe as the leads.

In 1997 he was part of the original producing team that created the first Teleton México, a 25-hr live show that invited people to pledge funds to build and operate hospitals for children with disabilities. He worked at that show for 25 years with added responsibilities each year, until he was writing, producing and directing the live show during his last 5 years in charge before leaving the project in 2022. He left it due to other work commitments that clashed with it, prompting him to respect the importance of the show and stepping down to allow other producers with more time to continue it.

In 2019 his contract with Televisa expired, and he moved on to 3Pas Studios, the LA-based production company founded by Eugenio Derbez and Ben Odell, joining the team as the SVP of Spanish-language production[2], as well as joining forces with Derbez, Odell and Pablo Calasso, who had been his partner in a small production outfit, to open the physical production arm Visceral in Mexico City.

Williams has been invited to be the juror in numerous competitions such as the International Emmy Awards and the International Emmy Kids Awards, among others and was invited to deliver a TEDx talk on the responsibility of creating content in social media[3], a theme he talked about several times while producing children's shows.

Awards

Several of the productions in which Williams has been involved have received or been nominated for various awards such as the International Emmy for the show La Expedición -Más Allá de lo Imposible[4], the Champion of Health award from the Pan American Health Foundation for PSAs that Williams wrote and produced with Plaza Sesamo during Mexico's 2008 pandemic[5], Premios Bravo, World Media Festival, Hugo Awards, and Cine Gold Eagle for his Plaza Sesamo seasons, TVyNovelas award for the Teletón, and Premios Bravo for S.O.S., as well as receiving personal honors from several organizations.

Most recently, several productions overseen by him and produced through Visceral have also received various awards in several categories[6].

Academic pursuits

Williams has always studied the material culture of the Late Antique period, following this passion through academia, where he followed the path of a BA, an MSc and a PhD to formalize his research. He designed and presented a poster on Regal Visigothic Coinage in the XIII International Numismatic Congress in Madrid in 2003 with great reviews, and published in the convention's memoirs[7]. His doctoral thesis was supervised by Prof. Neil Christie's supervision and with Prof. Gisela Ripoll and Sr. Deidre O'Sullivan as readers. As of 2024, Williams is currently an Honorary Visiting Fellow at the School of Archaeology and Ancient History in the University of Leicester[8], and part of the Toletum Network that studies the Iberian Peninsula in Antiquity[9]
