A naturally occurring ocean phenomenon where a fast moving tide passes through a constricted passage resulting in the formation of waves, eddies and potentially hazardous currents. In extreme cases, such as Skookumchuk Narrows in British Columbia, through which tides can travel at more than 17 knots, very large whirlpools form which, legend has it, have caused the demise of quite large ships.
