"Hotchkiss"(ホチキス or alternatively ホッチキス in Japanese, 호치키스 in Korean)is also the generic name for office staplers in Japan and Korea, almost certainly deriving from the brand name of early staplers, in much the same way as "Hoover" is used as a generic name for vacuum cleaners in the UK. As explained in this article, the name derives from an American company named E H Hotchkiss which made staplers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many Japanese sources erroneously attribute the name to Benjamin B. Hotchkiss, who may have been an uncle of E H Hotchkiss.
