Kaijū (怪獣), literally meaning strange beast or mysterious beast, is a popular Japanese term referring to strange creatures, especially giant monsters as portrayed in Japanese fantasy movies and shows (tokusatsu and anime), more precisely termed daikaijû (大怪獣 - "giant monster"). The similar term kaijin (怪人) refers to human-like monsters (Humanoids) in related genre. The most famous of these creatures is Godzilla (ゴジラ).

Other well known Kaiju include Gamera (ガメラ), and Ultraman. In Japan, Ultraman (ウルトラマン) is not usually considered to be a Kaiju (beast). The term Ultra-Kaiju (ウルトラ怪獣) refers to monsters in Ultra Series.
