Mary Corleone is a fictional character in the The Godfather Part III, portrayed by Sofia Coppola. She is portrayed as the daughter of Michael Corleone and Kay Adams and sister of Anthony Vito Corleone.

The Godfather Part II

Mary first appears as the youngest child of Michael and Kay. Like Anthony, she has not much of a role or story arc in the film.

The Godfather Part III

Mary, although close to her father, is sheltered from the violent world of the Corleone crime family. She is just as precious to Michael as her brother is to him. Upon meeting, she falls in love with her cousin, Vincent 'Vinnie' Mancini-Corleone, who is also Michael's hotheaded protegé and heir to the business. While on a trip to Sicily, Michael disapproves of the romance, believing her marriage to his successor would put Mary in danger. After being appointed Godfather toward the end of the film, Vincent ends the relationship to protect her. She is killed anyway, however, by an assassin trying to kill Michael after an opera and accidentally shoots Mary instead.

Michael is devastated by Mary's death, which happens as he is beginning to finally put his life as Don Corleone behind him and rekindle his estranged relationship with Kay Adams. A broken man, he retires to Sicily, where he eventually dies.

Behind the scenes

Sofia Coppola was given the role after the original choice, Winona Ryder, became sick. Her performance was blasted by most movie critics [1][2][3] of the Godfather series. In his Movie and Video Guide, critic Leonard Maltin calls the casting of Coppola an "almost fatal flaw."

Mary's aunt Connie Corleone is played by Talia Shire — Sofia Coppola's real-life aunt.

Sequel novels

Mary appears as a minor character in Mark Winegardner's sequel novels The Godfather Returns and The Godfather's Revenge, although in the original novel, Michael's second child is a son.
