Aegisub is a subtitles editing program extensively used in fansubbing. It is the successor of the original SubStation Alpha and also Sabbu and is usually considered to be the de facto program used for subtitling in the fansubbing community.[1][2]

It has been designed for timing and styling of subtitles, as well as the creation of karaoke. Although it works mainly with the Advanced SubStation Alpha format, it supports a few other common formats, such as SubRip. It supports timing to both audio and video, and can use many bindings to process those, such as FFmpeg and Avisynth. It can also be extended with the Lua, Perl and Ruby scripting languages.[3]

In fansubbing terms, Aegisub can be used for translating, timing, editing, typesetting, quality checking, karaoke timing and karaoke effecting, although many groups use different tools for some of those steps, such as Adobe After Effects for typesetting, or Notepad for translation.
