Anti Nuclear protests

The Brokdorf Nuclear Power Plant is located in Brokdorf. During the building phase in the 70's and 80's there were violent protests of nuclear power by opponents. The largest demonstrations were in November 1976, February 1977, January 1981 and June 1986.

30 October 1976

5,000 protestors take part in the first major demonstration at the construction site, more than 5,000 participants. Of these 2,000 forcibly break into the construction site. Several hundred police attack the area using water cannons and tear gas.[2]

13 November 1976

Brokdorf II: Police drop tear gas canisters on demonstrators making their way home from the demonstration, and there are reports of the police beating demonstrators[3] Over 150 people are injured, including 70 police officers.[2]

19 February 1977

6,500 riot police and 2,000 soldiers were mobilised from across the Federal Republic of Germany. Altogether, over 1,000 water cannons, armoured cars and other vehicles were used by the authorities in Brokdorf. Roadblocks were erected throughout Germany, and people entering through the Danish and Dutch border were questioned as regards their intentions.[4]
