Geography

Annur is located at 11°14′N 77°08′E / 11.23°N 77.13°E / 11.23; 77.13.[1] It has an average elevation of 338 metres (1108 feet).

Demographics

As of 2007 India census,[2] Annur had a population of 18,242. Males constitute 45% of the population and females 55%. Annur has an average literacy rate of 6%, which is higher than the national average of 9.5%; with 54% of the males and 55% of females literate.

History

The name Annur came from "Vanniyur", later transformed into Anniyur and now Annur. The myth behind the name says that, over 1000 years ago, when a small hunter hit a stone under a "Vanni" tree, it started bleeding. He was astonished and called the village people to look after this issue. Later they found a "Suyambu" Lord Shiva Idol there and built a temple.

Annur is one of the fast growing towns in the Coimbatore district with its sound business acumen, well connected roads to nearby towns like Mettupalayam, Avinashi, Tirupur, Sathyamangalam, and to nearby states like Karnataka and Kerala. Diverse business opportunities made it one of the hot business centres and real estate targets. The drinking water facility is a great gift to this town.

Demand has been tabled with Government of Tamil Nadu to announce Annur as Taluk head quarters. As a result of joining the Avinashi Taluk to the newly formed Tirupur district, this town is now in the Coimbatore North Taluk, Coimbatore district.

Banks and ATMs

Annur has many banks (Indian Overseas Bank's seventh branch, Indian bank, Union bank), that were started long back, as one bank is not enough to cater the financial needs of this town. People in the town welcome private banks and nationalized banks to set up their branch in this industrial town, considering the huge textile transaction, transport operations, oil and cotton market, agriculture and other businesses.

The Indian Bank has its branch in Pasur village, 6 kilometres from Annur, on the way to Sathyamangalam. It has set up an ATM in Annur (on the way to Coimbatore).

Axis bank has set up an ATM on the Sathyamangalam road, with in the Ambal & Co petrol bunk premises.

Syndicate Bank has opened its branch at Sathy Road, Dr.A.V.Shanmugam Building with ATM facility and with core banking solution facility.

Union Bank of India opened its branch at Coimbatore Road with ATM facility.

Indian Overseas Bank also have a ATM facility in Annur which is located in Coimbatore Road.

Hospitals

Annur has a number of basic to advanced healthcare facilities. The Government hospital is located in the Coimbatore road. Besides this, numerous private facilities exist.

Number of hospitals on Coimbatore road, run with plastic surgeon, gynaecologist and ex-army Colonel. Multi-floor, multi-speciality hospitals handle accident cases as well as maternity cases and all types of problems are handled.

Temples

The most famous temple is called Manneeswara Swamy Temple, built 1000 years ago by Chera kings. There are also many temples in and around Annur. Schools and colleges

Annur is the major town for the surrounding villages. Due to this, numerous colleges and schools are being built in and around it. Some of them are listed below:

There are two Government higher secondary schools and five Matriculation schools located in and around Annur. The oldest school is Muthu Gounder Government Higher Secondary School, located on the way to Avinashi from Annur. The land for this school was donated by eminent Congressian Sri Muthu Gounder.

Another is Gandhiji Govt. Hr. Sec. School, Sokkampalayam. Here there are five hostels located; three girl hostels and two boy hostels.

KG Family runs KG Girls Higher Secondary School and KG Matriculation School, which is a big and famous institution in the town.

Swami Vivekananda Matriculation Higher Secondary School, St. Marys Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Navabharat School, SAV Matriculation School, Stanes School.

Ayyan Thiruvalluvar Arts & Science College is located nearby in Sellappampalayam village.

Sasurie Engg. college is another college nearby in the village Kariampalayam, which is 5 km from Annur.

The main elementary school in annur is annursouth which is located near BSNL office within which A.E.E.O OFFICE is located.

Industries

After two decades of continued growth and progress in the indigenous areas of cotton (textile) value chain, today Annur has emerged as a regional hub for cotton ginning and spinning industries and a major contributor to the state's GDP. Along with Tirupur and Coimbatore (where the other links of textile value chains are concentrated), this part of India has become a prominent player in national and international textile markets. Other engineering industries like high precision steel works are also adding a positive value to the industrialisation of Annur. With this growth, there also come opportunities for further development in various growth areas, like infrastructure, education, health care, and culture.

People

The majority of the people who live in Annur are aboriginal South Indian people. Most of them have Tamil as their primary language. Apart from this, a considerable amount of people speak Telugu, Kannada as their secondary language. A vast portion of the youth in the town works in Coimbatore and Tiruppur.

Transport

Annur lies amidst cities like Coimbatore, Sathyamangalam, Tiruppur and Mettupalayam. It has adequate links with these cities, which are more or less an hour away from the town. Railway and air links are available in these cities.

The Buses from Coimbatore to Sathyamangalam and from Tiruppur to Mettupalayam goes through Annur.

The Major City bus is 45C that plies to Gandhipuram via Kovilpalayam, Ganeshapuram, Ganapathy, and takes 75 min. Other city buses like 45D, 45E, A11, AR3 link Annur with the nearby villages.

Lot of tour operators like MS CABS, MR TRANSPORT etc., who can arrange for tour packages in and around the area...
