Ballal (Ballala) is a surname mostly found in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts of Karnataka state, India. The surname is found in Jain,[1] Bunt and Shivalli Madhwa Brahmins communities of these regions. Ballal was generally a surname of local kings or chieftains in Tulu Nadu. Ballal surname is also found in Vidarbha, Marathwada and Desh regions of Maharashtra. The surname is found in Deshastha Brahmins Community in this region.
