Teru teru bōzu
Appearance
Teru teru bozu (Japanese: てるてるぼうず) is a ghost doll made of white paper or cloth that Japanese farmers began hanging outside of their window by a string. This ghost doll is supposed to have magical powers to bring good weather. Usually it is intended to stop or prevent a rainy day. Today, Japanese children often hang these "weather dolls" before a school trip. The name means "shine, shine, shaven head" referring to the shaven head of a Buddhist monk.
