"Feel This Moment"
Song

"Feel This Moment" is a song by Cuban-American rapper Pitbull, featuring American recording artist Christina Aguilera. It was released as the fourth single from his seventh studio album Global Warming (2012).[1] The song was written by Nasri Atweh, Adam Messinger, Nolan Lambroza, DJ Buddha, Pitbull, and Aguilera, while production was handled by Adam Messinger, Sir Nolan, Nasri and DJ Buddha. The song features a re-created (not sampled) melody from "Take on Me", as performed by A-ha and written by Magne Furholmen, Morten Harket, Pål Waaktaar, who received writing credits.[2]

"Feel This Moment" is a dance-pop, hip house and electro house song, about stopping to take a moment to appreciate life. It received generally favorable reviews from music critics, who praised Aguilera's vocals, calling it "gorgeous,"[2] while also praising the sample used on the song. It has charted in some territories, such as Austria, Canada, France and Switzerland, following the release of Global Warming.

Background

On October 16, 2012, Pitbull's official website gave a list of possible collaborators who were expected to appear on the album, with Christina Aguilera being one of them.[3] "Feel This Moment" is the first collaboration between Pitbull and Aguilera.[4] Pitbull spoke about the collaboration with Aguilera in an interview, stating: "'Feel This Moment' is a special record, and to work with Christina Aguilera is an honor, a blessing, someone that I highly respected, as far as her talent, her voice, her range that she can take it, and I think 'Feel This Moment' is gonna be a great record, because it's got a very powerful sample and everybody's gonna dance too. On top of that, when I say 'Feel this Moment' is basically, 'feel life, don't live life for a moment, live life for life, that is your moment'."[5] A 1-minute, 37-second snippet of the track, leaked online on October 23, 2012,[4] while the full track leaked on November 13, 2012.[6]

Composition and lyrics

The song samples "a-ha"'s smash hit "Take on Me".

"Feel This Moment" was written by Nasri Atweh, Adam Messinger, Nolan Lambroza, DJ Buddha, Pitbull and Christina Aguilera,[7] while production was handled by Messinger, Nasri, Sir Nolan and DJ Buddha.[8] It interpolates the hook from Norwegian synthpop band a-ha's famous 1985 hit "Take on Me". The song's writers, Magne Furuholmen, Morten Harket, Pål Waaktaar, received writing credits for "Feel This Moment".[2] The song is a dance-pop, hip house and electro house song, about stopping to take a moment to appreciate life.[6] Set to a thumping club beat, the singer spits, "Let's stop time and enjoy this moment",[6] followed by Christina belting, "One day when my light is glowing, I’ll be in my castle golden / But until the gates are open, I just wanna feel this moment."[4] Pitbull makes reference to E.L. James' best-selling erotic novel 50 Shades of Grey when he raps: "She read books, especially about red rooms and tie ups."[4] According to Jason Lipshut of Billboard, "'Feel This Moment' is structured an awful lot like 'Get It Started,' Pitbull's recent single with Shakira," available on Global Warming's deluxe edition.[2] Jenna Hally Rubestein of MTV Buzzworthy asked, "Is it just us or has there been an influx of 'live for the moment!' songs as of late?," citing Ludacris, David Guetta, and Usher's single "Rest of My Life," and Ke$ha's "Die Young."[6]

Critical reception

Aguilera's appearance was praised by critics, who noted that her vocals are "gorgeous"[2].

The song received very good reviews from critics. David Jeffries of Allmusic picked the song as one of the album's standout tracks, calling it a "glorious disco explosion."[8] Entertainment Weekly's journalist Ray Rahman thought that Feel This Moment was "the best song on the album", writing that "it whisks a Take On Me sample to places it's never been before."[9] Sarah Godfrey of The Washington Post agreed, recommending the track, as one of the three best tracks on the album.[10] Mikael Wood of the Los Angeles Times wrote that "it turns A-ha's '80s synth-pop curio 'Take on Me' into the stuff of a Las Vegas bachelorette bash."[11] Jeremy Thomas of 411 Mania praised Aguilera's appearance, writing that she "adds some musical substance to Pitbull's style and makes for a track that, if not necessarily good, at least is very listenable."[12]

Sam Lanksy of Idolator called it "doozy", praising Aguilera's part, calling it a "memorable chorus", adding that the song "fares better than her yowling on Chris Mann's cover of 'The Blower's Daughter'."[4] Jason Lipshut of Billboard also praised her vocals, calling it "gorgeous pipes."[2] Rick Florino of Artist Direct also praised her, writing that "Aguilera delivers a shimmering refrain as Pitbull's flow drives the verses smoothly."[13] Nicolle Weeks of 4Music also enjoyed, writing that "This is actually quite a catchy tune to dance to and it boasts a sick hook. It doesn’t feature any misogyny, which is nice."[14]

Julianne Escobedo Shepherd of Spin wrote a mixed review, stating that "The Christina Aguilera collab should be a major crossover situation — she chips in a slightly cheesy, Selena-alluding diva vocal combined with Miami-worthy sub-bass, but a-ha's 'Take on Me' hook played on a handsy techno synth overrides both vocalists. You end up feeling like you've landed in a commercial for Jock Jams 58, shilling lowest-common-denominator dance music that presumes our inability to appreciate anything that doesn't smash us over the cranium with an eight-pound Neoprene exercise weight.[15] A reviewer from Popjustice was negative towards "Feel This Moment" and will.i.am's song "Scream & Shout" (2012), stating that what the "two songs represent is pop music writhing around in its own shit."[16]
