Somerset is a residential neighbourhood in the south-west quadrant of Calgary, Alberta. It is located at the southern edge of the city, north of the Spruce Meadows Trail and east from the community of Bridlewood and west from Macleod Trail. The Spruce Meadows equestrian facility is located immediately south-west.
Somerset is a relatively new neighbourhood, being established in 1995. It is represented in the Calgary City Council by Ward 13 Alderman Diane Colley-Urquhart.[3]
The community is served by the Somerset-Bridlewood station of the C-Train LRT system (201 line).
Demographics
In the City of Calgary's 2012 municipal census, Somerset had a population of 8,540 living in 3,136 dwellings, a 1.7% increase from its 2011 population of 8,401.[4] With a land area of 2.3 km2 (0.89 sq mi), it had a population density of 3,710/km2 (9,620/sq mi) in 2012.[5][4]
Residents in this community had a median household income of $88,150 in 2000, and there were 6.6% low income residents living in the neighborhood.[1] As of 2000, 23.1% of the residents were immigrants. A proportion of 10.8% of the buildings were condominiums or apartments, and 4.8% of the housing was used for renting.[2]
Education
The community is served by the Somerset School (K~4) public school, and Samuel W. Shaw School.(5~9) Both of these schools are run by the Calgary Board of Education. Bishop O'Bryne Catholic High School is also readily accessible to Somerset Residents, which is run by the Calgary Catholic School Board.
Entertainment
Somerset residents pay annual community fees for a popular water "splash" park, two tennis courts, and a jungle gym area. The splash park facility is open to all residents from 8am - 10 pm during the summer months. The somerset community facilities are located at the junction of Somerset Drive and 6th street as residents first enter the north side of the Genstar somerset development area. Somerset residents ask visitors to kindly remember that the public green space and leisure zone do fall within a playground zone, so monitor your speed accordingly when entering the community.
The elementary school has a large baseball diamond and jungle gym that are open to public use outside of the school's business hours. The school also has a large jungle gym area.
Somerset has many pedestrian paths throughout the community for walking, jogging, rollerblading, or biking. Residents walking their dogs are encouraged to keep all pets leashed at all times, and keep their pets on the paved pathways.
Many of the residents of Somerset enjoy the neighbourhood's accessibility to other leisure activities: The Shawnessy YMCA, Yoga Studios, Empire Cinema Theaters, Numerous Pubs, and a large Chapter's Bookstore.
Shopping
Somerset is footsteps away from great shopping. There are several great discount retailers in the area such as Winners, an Aldo Outlet Store, Warehouseone Jeans, the Shoe Company, and Sport Check.
"Big Box" Stores nearby include names like Walmart, Future Shop, the Home Depot, and Canadian Tire.
