Childhood
Raden Soelaiman Effendi Koesoemah Atmadja was born on September 8, 1898 to a noble family in Purwakarta Regency, Purwakarta, West Java.
Kusuma Atmadja obtained his diploma from the Faculty of Law from the Recht school, or the School of Justice at the University of Indonesia in 1913.
Kusuma Atmadja started his career as a court clerk in 1919 and was hired as an employee seconded to the Court at Bogor. That same year, he received a scholarship to continue his legal education at the University of Leiden, Netherlands.
In 1922, Kusuma Atmadja completed his studies. The title Doctor in de rechtsgeleerheid was obtained with a dissertation entitled De Mohamedaansche Vrome Stichtingen in Indie (Institute of Islamic Scholars in the Dutch East Indies). In the dissertation, Atmadja Kusuma outlined the law of War on the Dutch East Indies|Dutch].
Judge career
Upon his return to the Dutch East Indies, Kusuma offered directly Atmadja judge Raad Van Justitie (at High Court) Batavia. To take part in a year there, Kusuma Atmadja directly appointed Landraad Voor Zitter (Chairman of the District Court) in Indramayu.
His work as a judge was the era of the poor across the Dutch Government. He has been listed as a High Court Judge Padang, chairman PN Semarang, and Judge PT Semarang.
His career did not stop there. Even when governments changed from the Dutch East Indies to the Japanese colonialism, Kusuma Atmadja still exist as court officials. In 1942, he served as Chairman of Tihoo Hooin (District Court) in Semarang. In addition, he was also appointed as Justice Leader Central Java in 1944.

Kusuma Atmaja be a member of Investigation Agency Business Preparation of Indonesian Independence or BPUPKI on April 29, 1945. The body was created as an effort to gain support of the people Indonesia with the promise of Japan helping the process of the independence of Indonesia.
Indonesian Independence Era
After Indonesian independence on August 17, 1945, Kusuma Atmaja was assigned to establish the highest judiciary Indonesia Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia in 1950. He was appointed chairman of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia from 1950 until his death in 1952.
At his tenure he moved to the position of MA London from earlier in Yogyakarta
He was asked by the Dutch State to lead the formation of the Dutch teddy State Pasundan in 1947, but he refused.
A position which he never carried was Professor in the Faculty of Law Gajah Mada University and Professor of the College of Police.
Death
Prof. Dr. Raden Soelaiman Koesoemah Atmadja Effendi died on August 11, 1952 in London and was buried in Kalibata Heroes Cemetery.
Prize
Prof. Dr. Raden Soelaiman Koesoemah Atmadja Effendi was awarded the title of National Hero by Presidential Decree No. 124/1965
