Burns Paiute Tribe
The Burns Paiute Tribe of the Burns Paiute Indian Colony of Oregon is a federally recognized tribe of Northern Paiute Indians in Harney County, Oregon, United States.[1] They are primarily the descendants of the Wadatika band of Northern Paiutes who traditionally lived in Central and Southern Oregon.[2]
Reservation
The tribe has a federal reservation in Harney County, the Burns Paiute Reservation and Trust Lands,[3] also known as the Burns Paiute Indian Colony, located north of the city of Burns.[1] The reservation comprises 11,944 acres (48.34 km2). In 1990, 151 tribal members lived on the reservation; in 1992, 356 people were enrolled in the tribe.[3]
Language
The Burns Paiutes traditionally spoke the Northern Paiute language, which is part of the Western Numic branch of the Uto-Aztecan language family.[4]
Today
The tribe's headquarters are located in Burns. The tribe is governed by a seven-person tribal council.<http://www.burnspaiute-nsn.gov/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=63:burns-paiute-tribal-administration-today&catid=37:history&Itemid=57> For economic development, the Burns Paiute created the Old Camp Casino, the Sa-Wa-Be Restaurant, and an RV park in Burns.[1]
