Rejected article on AFC
Hi. I wrote an article on Ken Block last month (Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Ken Block (businessman)) and it was rejected yesterday. I followed the guidelines in the AFC wizard to the letter so I'm not sure what I did wrong. The reviewer left a link but it doesn't work. I'm guessing they meant WP:POLITICIAN but I didn't submit Block as a politician. I was going by Wikipedia:Notability (people) ("If a person has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject, they are presumed to satisfy the inclusion criteria for a stand-alone article.") on the fourth page of the AFC wizard (Wikipedia:Article wizard/Biographical notability). I included 54 cited references which all pass Wikipedia:RS (Wikipedia:Article wizard/Sources). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. 72.74.204.125 (talk) 00:08, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
- It may be that Hasteur meant to type WP:N (the main notability page) and changed his mind and intended WP:POLITICIAN. Since Block is a politician, or at least a political figure, deriving most of his notability from his campaign for Governor and his subsequent political stands and advocacy. So it is appropriate to look at WP:POLITICIAN. He clearly does not pass point 1 of that, as he has never held office. Point 2 could be argued. So we fall back to WP:ANYBIO or the WP:GNG (point 3 of is basically just the WP:GNG restated). I will look this over from that point of view, and respond further. DES (talk) 00:31, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
- The draft looks acceptable to me, but as a matter of courtesy, and in case I missed soemthign relevant, i have left a message for the previous reviewer on User talk:Hasteur#Draft:Ken Block (businessman). DES (talk) 01:15, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
- By the way, while I would tend to approve this, there are a number of improvements that I think can and should be made. First, since Block is largely notable as a political figure -- his business career alone would probably not justify an article -- I would name this Ken Block (politician) or perhaps "political activist". Secondly, in the "Master Lever" section especially there is some prose that confuses what is being attributed to Block or others with what is being stated as fact. In particular, the sentence "The master lever also created an unfair advantage for majority political parties at the expense of minority and third-parties." is stated as if it were a fact, but is uncited. It looks to me as if this is the opinion of Block, or perhaps of the Moderate Party or others seeking removal of the "master lever" option. If so, it needs to be clearly attributed. That whole paragraph blurs from attributed opinion to what look like statements of fact, but are probably continued opinion. This needs to be fixed. Also, there is little or no mention of any negative opinions of Block. This makes it look like a promotional article. The reliably sourced negative opinions of Block (and I can't beloved that there are none, after he was in a campaign for Gov, much less his other activities) must be quoted and attributed. DES (talk) 01:15, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the help. I'll keep working on the article. The claim "The master lever also created an unfair advantage for majority political parties at the expense of minority and third-parties." is sourced to Politifact.com, WarwickOnline.com. I included everything I could find online that appeared to be a reliable source. There's not a whole lot of criticism of Block, I think, simply because he's never held political office. That being said there are criticisms of Block included in the article. In the "2010 election" section he's blamed by political insiders, and specifically the RI Republican Party, for his part in the 4-way race that got Chafee elected into office (citations 5 and 8). The fourth paragraph of the "Jump to the Republican Party" deals with his poor rating on PolitiFact.com (citation 51). I know he got some flak for joining the Republican Party though I don't have a specific source for that. 72.74.204.125 (talk) 03:11, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
- Er no it isn't do sourced. Neither of those articles mention an effect on mintority parties at all, ewither in the editorial voice or in a quote attributesd to Block or indeed to anyone else. Moreover, neither is cited in the Wikipedia article to support that statement. But this discussion should now move to the article talk page. DES (talk) 11:00, 28 February 2014 (UTC)

The primary issue was that you had not "closed" the footnote by placing a </ref> tag at the end. That meant the software looked at everything as part of the footnote to display at the bottom of the page. Since you couldnt see the content, you placed another copy of the body and closing and that just repeated the error again.

Switching article and redirect page
Owing to the good faith action of an earlier editor the article on the actress Mabel Terry-Lewis is wrongly titled Mabel Terry–Lewis with an en-dash where the hyphen should be. There is a redirect page with the correct title. The content of the article should be on Mabel Terry-Lewis rather than Mabel Terry–Lewis, and the latter should be either removed altogether or turned into a redirect page. I do not know how to do this without mucking up the edit history of the article. Help gratefully received. Tim riley (talk) 08:51, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
- Done I think a simple move would have been sufficient, but I am not sure if the redir met the qualifications for a non-admin to move over it. As per MOS:HYPHEN, a personal name is joined with a hyphen, not a dash. DES (talk) 10:42, 28 February 2014 (UTC)

- That won't help here because the AfD page needs to be created first for any bot to know to act and the issue is that IPs can't create non-talk pages so the person cannot create the AfD page itself. The best solution would be for you, 71.20.250.51, to create an account, which should take you less than one minute. I would go do the nomination for you and someone else might, but I am unwilling because from the text of your nomination it does not look like you have done any due diligence (see WP:BEFORE) to see whether this person is actually notable, rather than whether the article demonstrates notability. The former, and not the latter, is a proper basis for a resource intensive AfD.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 19:04, 28 February 2014 (UTC)

Widths of content on the right-hand side
Take a look at Alois Delug, and specifically the right-hand side. There's an infobox, a picture and a box with a link to Commons. All three are right-aligned but have different widths, and that's making the page look ugly. Is there a non-horrible way to fix that (i.e., no substing in templates onto the page and fiddling with magic numbers there, no hard-coding image widths)? Facing the Sky (talk) 15:31, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
- Well, you could move the commons category template to the left by including "|position=left" to the template but I don't know if that will make it any prettier to you. It looks fine the way it is to me. If more text were added to the article, that would help the whitespace at the bottom of the article. Dismas|(talk) 15:46, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
- I tried previewing with the commonsbox on the left, but it didn't really look good there either (and I couldn't rationalise it appearing in the 'References' section anyway). That doesn't help the infobox-picture discord, either. I agree it'd look better with more text, but the article as it is needs some more sources dug out before it can be expanded. Facing the Sky (talk) 15:54, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
- How about an 'External links' section at the bottom
with. You can tinker with the infobox image by adding|position=left
parameter for the Commons link|image size =
Also, the thumbnail painting image can be tinkered with by replacing "thumb" with XXXpx (XXX is size in pixels). You could also consider moving the image to a {{gallery}} (and add others) -- which displays horizontally. ~Just a thought, ~:71.20.250.51 (talk) 16:28, 28 February 2014 (UTC)- Oh! See: Template:Commons category-inline ... this would work better for a link in the 'External links' section
- E.g.:
{{Commons-inline|Alois Delug}}
renders: - Media related to Alois Delug at Wikimedia Commons
- ~:71.20.250.51 (talk) 16:57, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
- How about an 'External links' section at the bottom
- The problem with hard-coding a pixel size for the picture is that then there's no automatic resizing according to preference/resolution—but the image in the infobox, which partially determines the infobox's width, would get resized. So, that only works if the infobox's image and the picture are given fixed sizes and the infobox's extra padding is also fixed, but I think that that might cause problems across different viewing configurations (e.g., images too large on phone screens, or too small on big monitors).
- If I can figure out a way to get Template:Authority control to render inline, an 'External links' section would be good for that and the commonsbox. Facing the Sky (talk) 17:03, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
Should list-like "Popular culture" info be moved to an article or to a disambiguation page?
Dear editors: There's an article, Still waters run deep, and a redirect to it Still waters run deep (fable). There is also an old Afc submission Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Still waters run deep which has a "popular culture" section. Then there's another page Still waters run deep (disambiguation). Should the "popular culture" information be added to the mainspace article as it is in the draft, or would this be unnecessary duplication? If the extra items are added to the disambiguation page instead, does the attribution need to be preserved? (It's just a few words.) —Anne Delong (talk) 17:36, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
- "In popular culture" sections should have third party sources discussing the how/what/whys the appearance in popular culture is notable/worth encyclopedia coverage. Without that, the DAB is a better home. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 18:05, 28 February 2014 (UTC)

A question, if I may, about user pages...
Hello there. I am not new to Wikipedia, but I'm new to editing, and I hope to get better at it. Before I start working for the benefit of other pages, though, I need to fix my own first, which brings me to my question. There is a certain position in which I would like to place a couple of userboxes on my user page. I'm sure there is a page with information about the codes necessary to do so, but where would that be? Thank you. GeekInItsPurestForm (talk) 00:31, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

Use of "etc" - is there a guideline?
I have noticed "etc" is used sometimes in Wikipedia, but doesn't this go against the principles if it's not obvious what the "etc" means? Wondering if there's any guidance on this - I can't find anything in the help pages (the example I'm looking at is Packaging and labeling, where there are several instances). Cheers! Tony Holkham (talk) 00:38, 1 March 2014 (UTC)
- I'm not aware of any specific guideline on the use of "etc", Tony Holkham, and i don't think we need one. I would say that, in general, clearer and less ambiguous writing is preferred. If you fell you can rewrite an article to improve its clarity, while still staying within what cited sources support, feel free to go ahead and be WP:BOLD. I looked at the uses of "etc" in Packaging and labeling and I didn't find any of them particularly unclear, although no doubt they could be improved. DES (talk) 01:24, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

If a person creates a page then blanks the page (and no one else has edited it), it is assumed that the author was conducting a test that is no longer required, and the page should be deleted. Biography of Sampson Moore, engineer
I am trying to contact the writer of this article as they may be able to help me. I am the great, great, great granddaughter of sampson Moore and the writer of the article is abviously related as well. I would love be able to contact them. Is this possible? and how would I go about it? Pabkab — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pabkab (talk • contribs) 10:15, 1 March 2014 (UTC)
- Doesn't seem very likely to be possible, but I see one of your relatives is attempting the same thing at User talk:Engineers11. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 10:22, 1 March 2014 (UTC)
- As this request is the only edit by your account, you may not understand the history of an article, so I will explain why Demiurge1000 is being so negative.
If you go to the page on Sampson Moore and click "View history" tab at the top, you will see that the article was created on 30 December 2011 by an editor User:Engineers11 if you then click on "contribs" after Engineers11's name you will see all the edits they made - which were all made on 30/31 December 2011.
Having only edited for 2 days, well over two years ago, it is unlikely that they will reappear. They have not answered the message left on their talk page User talk:Engineers11 by User:Moore des in February/March 2012. - Arjayay (talk) 11:12, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

- Looking at your edit history, you have not left a message for him at User talk:Elizium23, you left an unsigned message on your own talk page, not including any link to him, so will not be notified. Having last contacted him in July 2013, your talk page is hardly likely to attract his attention. I also note he gave you a link so you can e-mail him. You need to either leave a message on his talk page, or e-mail him. - Arjayay (talk) 12:09, 1 March 2014 (UTC)
Review of My Article
Hi,
I am writing to let you know that I have created an article by February 11, then edited it. my article is under review and I do not know it is in which stage. Would you please help me and let me know the time I will receive the final review result. - it is unlikely to be approved anytime soon no matter when it is actually reviewed. there is no evidence that it meets the requirements for a stand alone article: that independent reliable sources have written about it in a significant manner, and so the review is going to decline. In addition, the formatting is a mess with about a gazillion inappropriate external links in the body of the article. Those will all need to be removed. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 13:09, 1 March 2014 (UTC)
- in addition, the piece reads as an advertisement, not an encyclopedia article. all addresses to the reader (" gives you this opportunity to " ) will need to be removed. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 13:31, 1 March 2014 (UTC)
- Wikipedia is not a link repository, and it's not a place to promote a product. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, it contains encyclopedia articles. Your content is merely a paragraph describing a product (that "sources" its own website) and a directory of links, it is not an encyclopedia article. I suggest you glance at WP:COI before attempting a rewrite, as well. Scarce2 (talk) 13:40, 1 March 2014 (UTC)
Formatting weirdness
The Yonsei University article's header seems to display its name in italics, for no reason I can understand. I've looked for the usual ways in which an article might display an italicised title, such as the DISPLAYTITLE or {{italic title}} mechanisms, and can find nothing. Possibly this is happening through a template side effect, but I can't see it. Does anyone know how this is happening? -- The Anome (talk) 14:07, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

Barun De
Dear Madam/Sir,
I write to appeal against the editing of an article I had started on 21 May 2007 on Barun De. I signed in as B_de2002. It has been locked for an year, until 15 February 2014, by a group of editors, who have all commented on TalK: Barun De. My contention is that the contents of the page are not agreeable with the original writer of the article. Since there is no agreement between the original writer and a few editors, I sincerely request that the page be deleted.
Bikramjit De — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.194.241.191 (talk) 04:38, 2 March 2014 (UTC)
- The situation has been explained in crystal clear terms at Talk: Barun De, so you know that by coming here you are wasting your own time and ours. --David Biddulph (talk) 05:31, 2 March 2014 (UTC)
- Please read the policy that no one "owns" an article and the caution against forum shopping. By coming here after having the situation explained on the article talk page, you are forum-shopping. You have a right to request that the article be deleted via the Articles for Deletion process, but, as was discussed on the talk page, that is unlikely to prevail, because, although the subject is not notable as a historian, he is notable as an administrator. You do not have a right to request that the article be deleted because of disagreements between different editors, or because the article is not satisfactory to the subject's family. If you think that the subject's family has the right to veto the article if it doesn't pass their wishes, you are mistaken, and as David Biddulph said, you are wasting everyone's time including your own. That is not how Wikipedia works. Robert McClenon (talk) 00:30, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
Changing link target in template
There are quite a few articles, such as Liswerry and Ringland, Newport, that use {{Infobox UK place}} with unitary_wales = [[Newport, Wales|Newport]]. But the sentence below the map that says, for instance, "Liswerry shown within Newport", still links to Newport (a disambiguation page) rather than to Newport, Wales. How can I fix this? —Mr. Granger (talk · contribs) 05:20, 2 March 2014 (UTC)
- The problem is in Template:Infobox UK place/local, which is a protected template. I have made an edit request at Template talk:Infobox UK place/local. Thanks for pointing it out. --David Biddulph (talk) 05:46, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

how to change title of an article
There's a small mistake in the name of the person. (link below)
the last name first letter is in lower case, and I dont know how to change it:
it says: David lussier but it should be David Lussier (capital L)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_lussier
is there a way to change it? Because if the search engine is case sensitive it could be a problem.

- @Wisez001: I've moved it for you and done a copyedit, added categories and so on. You would not have been able to move it yet as your account is not yet autoconfirmed. Here's the problem Wisez001: you are not using reliable sources to verify the article but rather using user generated sources which neither show notability nor are they proper to verify the article's content.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 07:30, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

- Interesting log - starting at 17.07 today, one editor thanked the same other editor 30 times in 4 minutes, with 7 more in the subsequent minutes - is this a competition? or does it actually achieve anything? - Arjayay (talk) 17:54, 2 March 2014 (UTC)
- Arjayay, that actually sounds like abuse of the feature to me, which has been part of the argument for logging which edit in that BZ ticket I mentioned above. My current position is that the people who should be able to see which edit include the system itself (another ticket which is mentioned in there could use this information being added to the database to prevent multiple thanking from one user to another for the same edit), the user sending the thanks, the user who received the thanks, oversighters, and anyone who has been vetted through an election process or is otherwise attached to the privacy policy (admins, crats, developers, etc). Anyways... Happy editing! — {{U|Technical 13}} (t • e • c) 19:03, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

How do I upload an Image
I need help in knowing how to upload a JPG image from my computer so it shows up in my page article and question that I want to ask on the reference desk? I am new to Wikipedia, this is my first time. I don't want to mess it up and would appreciate a walk through the process. Can I copy and paste with my photo or what is the process? I am totally confused and need your help. thank youPolkateer (talk) 21:54, 2 March 2014 (UTC)
- Hello, Polkateer. Adding images to Wikipedia is a two-stage process: the image must first be uploaded from your computer to Wikipedia, or preferably to a sister project called Wikimedia Commons (because then the pictures can be used in other projects, such as other-language Wikipedias). Wikipedia is very strict on copyright, so the picture normally must have been explicitly released by the copyright holder on a suitable licence: if you hold the copyright (which will usually be the case if you took the picture), then you can licence it; but if you don't, and are not in contact with the copyright holder this may be difficult. (Most pictures found on the internet cannot be used, or can only be used under very limited restrictions, for this reasons). Once the image is in Wikipedia or Commons, then you can use it in an article.
- You can find out more about how to do these two steps at Help:Uploading images and WP:Image tutorial. --ColinFine (talk) 23:12, 2 March 2014 (UTC)
Query about inappropriately protecting talk pages
I have a concern about what I feel may be inappropriate protection of a talk page. A while back, I commented on a discussion on this talk page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Anjem_Choudary
I recently came across another dispute on the same page and, curious to see how the original discussion turned out, looked at it again.:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Anjem_Choudary/Archive2
The page has now been archived but, in a nutshell, it was addressing references to photos published in tabloid newspapers. User:Bencherlite felt that details sourced from tabloid newspapers are never acceptable for inclusion and, as he felt that this should be the end of the discussion, he made the decision to protect the section from further edits with the following justification:
"Wikipedia does not source information of this sort from tabloid newspapers. I have protected the page from editing from anonymous and new editors to prevent further breaches of the Wikipedia policy for articles about living people. That's enough of this discussion."
I have been unable to locate a particular Wikipedia guideline or rule that specifically addresses this but, as far as I am aware, for an editor to simply shut down discussion on a talk page because he disagrees with the forming consensus is way out of line. Is this correct? I have not seen this occur anywhere else on Wikipedia.
As an additional note, what concerns me further is that User:Bencherlite was probably wrong anyway. According to Wikipedia:Potentially unreliable sources the use of tabloid newspapers should only be avoided when there are other reliable sources. A blanket ban is simply not correct. As tabloid newspapers were the only source for the news in question, the information cannot be removed on this basis. Thus, it is even more concerning that not only did User:Bencherlite inappropriately close down a discussion, he did so on the basis on an incorrect application of editing policy.
I appreciate that this happened a while back (June 2013) but, on my recent revisit, it is clear that a small group of editors, primarily User:Bencherlite and User:Parrot of Doom have driven off a large number of other editors over a lengthy period of time with a constant refusal to permit edits they have not made, twinned with a generally aggressive and hostile approach. Thus, the issues that are raised by this inappropriate action are still ongoing and seem to be having a negative impact on the quality of the article and the collaborative editing process. I have said that I felt that the editors in question are acting inappropriately but many others have made similar comments and have been rudely rebuffed.
I would be grateful if someone could a) let me know whether I am way off base with these concerns and b) what steps I can take (if any) to try to assist in resolving these concerns about the editing process of this article? Thanks. Robinr22 (talk) 21:57, 2 March 2014 (UTC)
- WP:BLP is the policy you are looking for. Content about living people must be from impeccable sources, particularly potentially controversial content. Tabloids are certainly never allowed for use for their main fare - scandal about living people. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 03:04, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
- Please note that the discussion was closed but the talk page was never protected. The article only was semi-protected for 20 days, which was thereafter extended by another admin. By the way, I agree with both the protection and the decision to keep out unproven accusations by sensationalist sources in a biography of a living person.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 05:12, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
