Teams | 18 |
The 2014 Australian Football League season will be the 118th season of the elite Australian rules football competition.[1]
The season is scheduled to open on 14 March with Collingwood to host Fremantle at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne,[2] and is scheduled to conclude on 27 September with the AFL Grand Final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Pre-season
NAB Challenge
The NAB Cup competition will not be scheduled this year and will instead be replaced by the NAB Challenge series, which features 18 practice matches played over 18 days, beginning February 12 and ending March 1.[3] Each team will play two pre-season games, many of which will be played at suburban or regional venues; all games will be televised on Fox Footy. There had been a proposal to conclude the pre-season with an All-Star representative match, replacing the NAB Cup Grand Final as the centerpiece of the preseason, but this did not go ahead.[4] Although the Grand Final and Michael Tuck Medal were not retained, the Super Goal has been retained for these matches.

Premiership season
The full fixture was released on Thursday 31 October 2013.[5] Notable features of the draw included:
- Geelong will play most of its home games at night in 2014,[6] with its first game to be played against Adelaide on a Thursday night in Round 1.[7]
- The Melbourne Cricket Ground will be unavailable for Round 1 due to cricket commitments.[8] This means that the ground will not host a Round 1 match for the first time since 2006 (due to the Commonwealth Games), and the match between Richmond and Carlton which had served as the season's first match in Melbourne since 2008 will be held in Round 2 instead.[9]
- The AFL will trial three Sunday night matches during the season, all to be televised on the Seven Network.[10]
- Traeger Park in Alice Springs will host its first premiership match when Melbourne meets Port Adelaide in Round 11.[11]
- The fixture will see the eighteen teams split into three sections – the top six, middle six and bottom six, in accordance to their ladder position from 2013 to determine which clubs meet twice during the season.
