Mini survival kits, or "Altoids tins," are created by putting essential tools for survival in an Altoids or other similar sized tin and sealing it up with adhesive tape.
These have evolved into more complex (and standardised) models, best shown by the BCB International Combat Survival Tin [1].
A mini survival kit will usually contain all or some of the following items;
- miniature compass (e.g. Silva SERE 40)
- Esbit fuel tablets for fire starting
- a lighter or matches
- an unlubricated condom to carry water
- a length of paracord
- duct tape
- fishing hooks
- needles and thread for clothing repairs or for fishing line).
Doug Ritter provides an excellent example of a Mini Survival Kit [2].
