Cross of Gradac is a cultural monument located in the village of Gradac on the property of Ćurčić Dragutin, surrounded by a large number of smaller crosses.
The cross was built in the year of 1662 and served as a village record.[1]
Architecture
Despite its unusually large size, the Cross of Gradac is not near a cemetery, nor it is not thought to be designed as part of a graveyard. The reason for raising the cross has not yet been determined, but it is presumed that it was built in honor of an important event or a distinguished personality. The Cross is shallowly incised with Cyrillic text, but has been badly damaged and is consequently difficult to decipher [2] Studies have shown that for more than a century this cross was used as a village record but, due to much ornamentation, the inscription on the cross is badly damaged rendering it difficult to read. Partial description shows that the symbols are from the period of Early Christianity; they were inscribed in the year 1662.
