Area
Intermediate School 73 is located in Maspeth and is where most of the community's children attend grades 6 through 8. Grand Avenue runs along the center of this community. Local shopping and dining can be found along this avenue. Grand Avenue in Williamsburg becomes Grand Street, and Grand Avenue ends in Elmhurst. There is the Grand Street Bridge that provides access between Willamsburgh and Maspeth. Cemeteries take up a large part of this small neighborhood. This area is surrounded with multiple dwelling homes and there are hardly any apartment buildings, except for the co-ops on Maurice Avenue. Forty-Third Street through 58th Street is industrial, and from 60th Street to 72nd Street is residential. There was once a mining company here named Phelps Dodge Corporation, which was present from 1920-1983. The Phelps Dodge mining company heavily contaminated Newtown Creek. There is access available to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and the Long Island Expressway. On the former is the Kosciuszko Bridge, which separates Brooklyn and Queens. These expressways are accessible at 69th and Grand Street.
For many years Maspeth was a familiar name due to the Elmhurst-Maspeth Gas Tanks, which were a pair of large natural gas storage facilities. Because the Long Island Expressway frequently backed up in their vicinity, the gas tanks became a familiar item heard in radio traffic reports. However the gas tanks were removed in 2001.
Most of the people that live in Maspeth are of Polish, Italian, Irish, German, Hispanic or Asian descent.
